Our second art book with Phaidon is published in September 2019
Art prints in North Korea tell a unique story. As well as being famous for propaganda posters, prints have also been used for decades in the DPRK to depict stories of everyday life – from farmers to scientists to fishermen.
Printed in North Korea, published in September 2019, shares for the first time the fascinating and rarely seen world of North Korean printworks. The collection of unique lino-cut and woodblock prints is the result of Koryo founder Nicholas Bonner's 25 years of travel and research in the DPRK. Dating from the 1950s to the 21st century, these artworks – the largest collection of its kind in the world – are an unparralleled testament to the talent of North Korea's artistsand the social, cultural and political conditions in which they work.
Printed in North Korea is Koryo's second book to be published by Phaidon. The first, Made in North Korea, was published in 2017 and was one of Phaidon's best sellers. It went on to be a ground-breaking exhibition in Seoul (after a run at the House of Illustration in London), the first time that North Korean graphic design had been displayed publically in South Korea.
