Catch a cannon ball now, to take me on down the line. -The Band
On August 17, 2017 a special tourist train will run from Pyongyang to Mt. Myohyang, with return the the following day. This train trip is a new opportunity for travel through Korea's mountainous northwest on the way to visit the enchanting 'Mountain of Mysterious Fragrance' and the DPRK's International Friendship Exhibition.
Schoolchildren from Pyongyang ride the same route to visit the Mt. Myohyang and Sokam Schoolchildren's Union Camps during summer vacation. See below for an advertisement in the Pyongyang News from last August.
The train will depart Pyongyang at 06:00 and arrive at Hyangsan Station, the rail station for Mt. Myohyang, at 10:30. Breakfast will be sold on board for a small cost. Upon arrival, all travelers will tour the International Friendship Exhibition, a cavernous hall featuring gifts given to the DPRK state and leadership from foreign countries and dignitaries.
The two hour visit to the International Friendship Exhibition, will be followed by lunch at a nearby hotel an afternoon of hiking and sightseeing on Mt. Myohyang, including a visit to the historic Pohyon Temple. This 11th century temple houses a complete work of the Tripitaka Koreana, a complete work of Buddhist scriptures commissioned by the Koryo Dynasty (918-1392 AD) to evoke divine intervention from foreign invaders. The fighting monks of this temple also played a major role in repelling the invading Japanese armies of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the late 16th century.
