Visit the DPRK border town of Sinuiju

This North Korean border city has welcomed hundreds of thousands of Chinese day-trippers over the years, but — thanks to Koryo’s efforts — has been open to Western visitors since 2014. Accessible either as a day trip from Dandong, or as an overnight extension to any of our tours that exit the DPRK by train, a trip here will take you to the banks of the Yalu/Amnok river on the DPRK side, as well as a local art gallery, a kindergarten specialising in unicycling and performance skills (really!), a local park, museum, and (of course) statues of the DPRK’s Leaders. Either the day trip or the tour extension offer a great look at this frontier city.

Sinuiju — overnight extension

If you're leaving Pyongyang by train then don’t miss the chance to add an extra 24 hours to your DPRK adventure with a stop in the country's frontier city of Sinuiju. You will see the sites of what is the main city in this region, and all the associated activity on the Chinese border — gaze across the river while wondering what it must be like to live under the shadow of such a different neighbour. This extension includes a full tour of the city, as well as an overnight in the countryside Dongrim Hotel.

Itinerary

  1. Revolutionary Museum
  2. Cooperative Farm
  3. Dongrim waterfalls
  4. Cosmetics Factory
  5. Folk Park
  6. Korean side of the ‘broken bridge’
  7. Art Gallery
  8. Kindergarten
Day 1.

•   Your train departs from Pyongyang Central station at 10:10 and spends a few hours working its way through the fields and towns of rural DPRK. Enjoy the sights and have time to relax until reaching Dongrim County and disembarking here into the capable care of your local guide
•   Drive to Dongrim Hotel where a newly finished hotel stands. First class hotel with 24 hour electricity and hot water; shop, bookstore, banquet hall, bar, swimming complex, welfare facilities, and training course
•   Hike to nearby Dongrim Falls – a legend has it that a hunchback was straightened up from taking showers at the falls. Those who enjoy nature can hike up to the peak to a second water fall

Day 2.

•   After breakfast drive to Sinuiju city to begin the final day of the tour
•   Sinamri cooperative Farm – see how agriculture works in this area, one of the more fertile parts of the country with a viewing platform to have the first glimpse of China and the unopened New Yalu River Bridge
•   Sinuiju Cosmetics Factory – to see production lines, learn about what cosmetics are popular among the ladies of North Korea, and even pick up a few bargains in the factory shop
•   Sinuiju main city square with its statues of the DPRK’s Leaders. Modernised in 2015 and bounded by the local museum and the railway station
•   North Phyongan Provincial Revolutionary Museum – devoted to the history of revolutionary activity in the area this will give a good introduction about the importance of this frontline city to the Korean national narrative
•   North Phyongan Provincial History Museum – historical remains from prehistoric times to the modern ages, antiquities excavated and collected in the province and materials are on display here
•   Sinuiju Kindergarten – tour this large and locally famous facility and finish with a stunning performance by some very talented children. This school is famous in the DPRK for training acrobats and performers from a young age
•   Lunch will be at a restaurant looking directly across the Yalu River to the Chinese city of Dandong, from here you can see the ruined struts that supported the Korean side of the ‘broken bridge’, bombed into the river in the early 1950s
•   Sinuiju Art Gallery – an eclectic collection of landscapes, socialist realism, portraits, and so on. Also has works for sale and prices here are significantly lower than in Pyongyang usually. Also has a portraitist on hand who can churn out pencil portraits in just a few minutes
•   Sinuiju Folk Park - is next. A thin park running through the city centre and along the railway lines. Depending on the season you can play some games, mix with local picnickers and retirees hanging around
•   Finally it is time to pass through customs and cross the (unbroken) bridge by bus into China, enter Dandong city and either disembark here or continue on the train ride to Beijing, with some great memories travelling with you!
