     Baghdad City Tour

      

     • Mutanabi Street | Explore the old part of Baghdad. We will go to Mutanabi Street, known as the Book Street, the antique market, and the old copper market. It is named after the 10th-century poet Al-Mutanabi.
        
     • Rasheed Street | Once Baghdad’s most prestigious avenue, lined with early 20th-century architecture, shops, and cafés.
        
     • Iraqi National Museum | Visit the Iraqi National Museum to get introduced to Iraqi culture and history throughout the years. The Iraqi National Museum houses a vast collection of artefacts from Mesopotamian civilisations, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian relics. It is considered one of the most important museums in the Middle East.
        
     • Abbasid Palace & Mustansiriya Madrasah | Two fine examples of Abbasid-era architecture. We will also visit Mustansiriya School, one of the oldest remaining schools in the world. The Mustansiriya Madrasa was established in the 13th century. It served as an important educational institution during the Abbasid era.
        
     • Tahrir Square & Firdus Square | See the sites associated with Iraq’s modern political history.
        
     • Abu Nawas Street | Evening stroll along the Tigris, with statues and gardens inspired by the tales of 1001 Nights.
        
     • Dinner on the Tigris River, trying Iraq’s famous dish, masgouf.

     Baghdad → Babylon → Karbala

     Babylon

     • Drive south to Babylon.

     • Ancient City of Babylon | Babylon was one of the most important cities of ancient Mesopotamia, known for its role as the capital of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar II. It is associated with significant cultural achievements, including the Code of Hammurabi and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

     • Saddam’s Palace | Pay a visit to Saddam’s Palace and see the last remnant from his regime.  From here, enjoy a great view of the ancient city.

     Karbala

     • Continue to Karbala.
        
     • Karbala is a holy city for Shia Muslims and the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein. It is the focal point of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

     Najaf 

     Najaf City Tour

     • Old City | Explore Najaf and Najaf’s Old City, one of the most important cities in the Shia Muslim world.
        
     • Wadi al Salam | We pay a visit to the largest cemetery in the world - Wadi al Salam. Meaning "Valley of Peace," it is located in Najaf and is the largest cemetery in the world. It has been a burial site for over 1,400 years.
        
     • We then take a trip to the market where we can buy local clothes and Abayas, as well as lots of other souvenirs. You'll need this local attire to enter the shrine. 
        
     • Imam Ali Shrine | The Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf is the burial site of Imam Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. The shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Shia Muslims. The golden dome of the Imam Ali Shrine draws pilgrims from across the globe. We will take a look inside the separated female/male sections, and you'll truly be astounded by the colours, lights, and decorations from this fantastic piece of architecture.

     Najaf → Uruk → Ur (Nasiriyah)

     • Drive south to Uruk, the world’s first great city, associated with the invention of writing and the Epic of Gilgamesh.

     • Continue to Ur to see the Ziggurat of Ur, a 4,000-year-old stepped temple.

     Nasiriyah

     • Visit Nasiriyah city in the evening.

     Marshes of Southern Iraq → Basra

     Mesopotamia Marshes

     • Travel to the Marshes, where we will have a late lunch of Masquf, the Sumerian local fish (vegetarian option available).

     • Marshes | A UNESCO-listed wetland where life has changed little over millennia. The Marsh Arabs still live in traditional reed houses and travel by narrow boats along the waterways.

     • Boat Trip in the Marshes | We take a boat trip to take a tour of the marshes and see what wildlife we can spot! 

     Basra

     • Basra | This is the main southern city and its largest port. It has long been a gateway for trade, culture, and ideas. Basra is also known for its canals lined with date palms!

     • Basra Museum | A look into the history of Basra and the surrounding areas. It used to be Saddam’s Palace.

     • Martyrs Monument | Go for sunset to the Martyrs Monument. The Martyrs Monument in Baghdad is a large blue-domed structure built in the 1980s to commemorate Iraqis who died in past wars. It is a symbol of national remembrance.

  On this trip, we aim to see as much as possible in a very short amount of time. Iraq has a lot of history on offer, so of course we want to make the most out of this trip. Because of that, the days may be long and it involves a lot of driving as we make our way from south to north.

  Over two incredible weeks, our Iraq group tour and Syria group tour combine to bring you face to face with the region’s history, culture, and unmatched hospitality. Guided by experts who bring context, safety, and connection to every stop, you’ll celebrate Christmas in Damascus and walk ancient cities and streets, retracing the footsteps of prophets, poets, and kings.

  Iraq Tour

  Our journey begins in Iraq, the land of ancient Mesopotamia.

  From the capital Baghdad, we explore a city where tradition and modern life meet. Through book markets, riverside cafés, and the treasures of the National Museum.

  We travel south to the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, where millions of pilgrims gather each year, and walk through the ruins of Babylon, Ur, and Uruk. The very places where writing and cities were born!

  In the far south, we glide through the Marshes of Mesopotamia, meeting families who still live in reed houses on the water, before reaching Basra, Iraq’s gateway to the Gulf.

  Lebanon & Syria

  We then go to Lebanon, where you will have a couple of days to explore and prepare to cross into Syria.

  From Beirut, we drive to Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth.

  We’ll wander along Straight Street, visit the Umayyad Mosque and Ananias Church, and share tea with locals at Al Nofara Café, where the city’s legendary storyteller still performs.

  We continue south to Bosra, home to the world’s best-preserved Roman theatre, then north through mountain landscapes to Mar Musa Monastery, Homs, and Aleppo.

  In Aleppo, we explore the grand citadel, restored souks, and the traditional soap factories the city is famous for.

  We’ll visit the mighty Krak des Chevaliers, sample local wines in the Homs countryside, and spend a night in the picturesque Christian village of Al Mishtaya.

  Our journey ends in Palmyra, once a jewel of the Silk Road and the seat of Queen Zenobia’s empire.

      Into Syria

      Beirut to Damascus Scenic Drive

      • We will leave early from the Lebanese capital on a scenic drive to the Syrian border, and onward to Damascus. This is a ca. 4-hour-long drive, including formalities at the Lebanon-Syria border.
         
      • Check in and a short recharge at our hotel in Damascus.

      The Historic Old Town of Damascus

      • Ananias Church | The oldest underground structure of Damascus and the presumed remains of Ananias of Damascus' home, where Saul was baptised, who is known today as Paul the Apostle.
         
      • Straight Street | Also known by its Latin name, Via Recta, is the Roman street that runs from East to West in Damascus' Old Town. The street has several sites dating back to the Roman, Christian, and Islamic periods, and according to the Book of Acts, St. Paul also visited here.
         
      • Al Nofara | The oldest café in Damascus, where we will listen to the famous storyteller.
         
      • Dinner will be at Naerj, the best restaurant in Damascus Old Town, where you are guaranteed to have one of the best meals of your life.
         
      • Optional evening scrub at a historic Hamam.

  11. December 24 | Thursday

      Damascus - Busra - Damascus

      • National Museum | Here, we will gain an overview of the civilisations that have thrived on Syrian soil. It exhibits statues, seals, jewellery, masks, mosaics, tablets, and weavings from the most important sites in the country.
         
      • Souk Al-Hamidiye | The most beautiful souk of Damascus. Its shops display a wide range of goods, including clothes, fabrics, pastries, and handicrafts.
         
      • Umayyad Mosque | A historic site of worship, dating back to the first millennium BCE, it was once a church and is now one of the most important mosques in the World.

      Drive to Busra

      • In the afternoon, we head south through the lush, fertile plains to the ancient city of Bosra al-Sham (also Busra / Busra al-sham).
         
      • Bosra is certainly home to the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world.
         
      • We'll explore the city’s rich Roman heritage, including its baths and captivating historical tales. 

      Drive back to Damascus

      • Arada Show in front of the Damascus Hotel.
         
      • Cooking class and Dinner with a Syrian family.

  12. December 25 | Friday

      Damascus to Aleppo

      Mar Musa

      • Our second stop along the road will be Mar Musa, a breathtaking 6^th-century monastery perched among rugged mountains.
         
      • Shaped like a towering fortress, this ancient site was founded by Mar Musa al-Habashi (Saint Moses of Abyssinia), who, according to legend, was the son of an Ethiopian king.

      Homs

      • Following this, we’ll head to Homs, the most affected city by the war. During our visit, we'll explore the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Shrine and the St. Mary Church of the Holy Belt, two significant landmarks of the city.
         
      • Lunch in Homs City.

      Aleppo

      • Aleppo has been a flourishing metropolis since the 3^rd millennium BCE. The city has been fighting with Damascus for the title of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city.
         
      • After some exploring of the city, we'll enjoy dinner at Qurtuba, a renowned Syrian restaurant run by an Armenian family, known for its authentic flavours and warm atmosphere.

  13. December 26 | Saturday

      Aleppo

      • Aleppo Castle | Located in the middle of the city, the castle dominates Aleppo from a height of fifty meters. Its admirably designed towers, along with its iron gates, are distinguished by their entrances made with perfection to prevent any enemy intrusion.
         
      • Aleppo Market | Stretching from the front of the castle to the old city, we'll witness the contrast between the destroyed areas, the active restoration sites, and the fully renovated section, which now looks stunning.
         
      • Abu Hagoub Restaurant | As Aleppo is renowned for its spicy sausage, we will have lunch at this famous restaurant to sample the best sausage sandwiches in the city.
         
      • Umayyad Mosque | The largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city, which is currently in the final stages of restoration.
         
      • Al-Jubaili Soap Factory | The oldest soap factory in Aleppo, where you'll have the opportunity to witness the traditional process of crafting the world-famous laurel Aleppo soap, renowned for its quality and history. We will also visit a soap exhibition where you can touch the largest bar of soap in the world, according to the Guinness World Records Book.
         
      • For sunset, we will visit one of our secret spots overlooking Aleppo.
         
      • Uncle Hamido's Restaurant | For dinner, we will get the chance to taste what is often hailed as the best falafel in the World.

      Aleppo - Idlib - Hama - Krak Des Chaveliers - Homs Countryside

      Idlib

      • Idlib Governorate | Here, we can observe a unique economic system distinct from other regions, and we will also visit the refugee camps, gaining insight into the challenges faced by displaced families.

      Hama

      • Drive south to Hama. Here, we'll visit the iconic waterwheels that once played a crucial role in providing water to the surrounding land. 

      Krak des Chevaliers

      • Krak des Chevaliers | After that, we'll continue our journey to Krak des Chevaliers, which is described by Lawrence of Arabia as "the most wholly admirable castle in the world."
         
      • In addition, this medieval crusader fortress is one of the most significant and well-preserved castles from that era, offering a fascinating glimpse into Syrian History.

      Jarjour winery

      • Jarjour Winery | We'll drive through the picturesque rural villages of the Homs Valley, heading to the renowned Jarjour winery, which is famous for its unique blue wine.
         
      • Here, we'll enjoy a wine and cheese tasting, immersing ourselves in the flavours of the region.

      Almishtaya

      • Afterwards, we take a short drive to the Christian village of Almishtaya, known for its vibrant nightlife. Indeed, you can experience the lively atmosphere and enjoy the evening in one of Syria's most charming villages.

      • Finally, we have an overnight stay in a 4-star hotel in Al Mishtaya-Homs countryside.

      Al Mishtaya - Palmyra - Damascus

      • Syria's most iconic tourist destination. Notably, once a key city on the Silk Road, Palmyra briefly ruled its own empire in the 3rd century, stretching from Turkey to Egypt.
         
      • However, despite being well-preserved, much of the city was sadly destroyed during the ISIS occupation in 2015.

     Beirut to Damascus Scenic Drive

     • We will leave early from the Lebanese capital on a scenic drive to the Syrian border, and onward to Damascus. This is a ca. 4-hour-long drive, including formalities at the Lebanon-Syria border.
        
     • Check in and a short recharge at our hotel in Damascus.

     The Historic Old Town of Damascus

     • Ananias Church | The oldest underground structure of Damascus and the presumed remains of Ananias of Damascus' home, where Saul was baptised, who is known today as Paul the Apostle.
        
     • Straight Street | Also known by its Latin name, Via Recta, is the Roman street that runs from East to West in Damascus' Old Town. The street has several sites dating back to the Roman, Christian, and Islamic periods, and according to the Book of Acts, St. Paul also visited here.

     • National Museum | Here, we will gain an overview of the civilisations that have thrived on Syrian soil. It exhibits statues, seals, jewellery, masks, mosaics, tablets, and weavings from the most important sites in the country.
        
     • Souk Al-Hamidiye | The most beautiful souk of Damascus. Its shops display a wide range of goods, including clothes, fabrics, pastries, and handicrafts.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | A historic site of worship, dating back to the first millennium BCE, it was once a church and is now one of the most important mosques in the World.

     Drive to Bosra

     • In the afternoon, we head south through the lush, fertile plains to the ancient city of Bosra al-Sham (also Busra / Busra al-sham).
        
     • Bosra is home to the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world.
        
     • We'll explore the city’s rich Roman heritage, including its baths and captivating historical tales.

     Christmas Day - Damascus to Aleppo

     Mar Musa

     • Our second stop along the road will be Deir Mar Musa, a breathtaking 6^th-century monastery perched among rugged mountains.
        
     • Shaped like a towering fortress, this ancient site was founded by Mar Musa al-Habashi (Saint Moses of Abyssinia), who, according to legend, was the son of an Ethiopian king.

     Homs

     • Following this, we’ll head to Homs, the most affected city by the war. During our visit, we'll explore the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Shrine and the St. Mary Church of the Holy Belt, two significant landmarks of the city.
        
     • Lunch in Homs City.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo has been a flourishing metropolis since the 3^rd millennium BCE. The city has been fighting with Damascus for the title of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city.
        
     • After some exploring of the city, we'll enjoy dinner at Qurtuba, a renowned Syrian restaurant run by an Armenian family, known for its authentic flavours and warm atmosphere.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo Citadel | Located in the middle of the city, the castle dominates Aleppo from a height of fifty meters. Its admirably designed towers, along with its iron gates, are distinguished by their entrances made with perfection to prevent any enemy intrusion.
        
     • Aleppo Market | Stretching from the front of the castle to the old city, we'll witness the contrast between the destroyed areas, the active restoration sites, and the fully renovated section, which now looks stunning.
        
     • Abu Hagoub Restaurant | As Aleppo is renowned for its spicy sausage, we will have lunch at this famous restaurant to sample the best sausage sandwiches in the city.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | The largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city, which is currently in the final stages of restoration.
        
     • Al-Jubaili Soap Factory | The oldest soap factory in Aleppo, where you'll have the opportunity to witness the traditional process of crafting the world-famous laurel Aleppo soap, renowned for its quality and history. We will also visit a soap exhibition where you can touch the largest bar of soap in the world, according to the Guinness World Records Book.

     • Drive south to Hama. Here, we'll visit the iconic waterwheels that once played a crucial role in providing water to the surrounding land. 

     Krak des Chevaliers

     • Krak des Chevaliers | After that, we'll continue our journey to Krak des Chevaliers, which is described by Lawrence of Arabia as "the most wholly admirable castle in the world."
        
     • In addition, this medieval crusader fortress is one of the most significant and well-preserved castles from that era, offering a fascinating glimpse into Syrian History.

     Jarjour winery

     • Jarjour Winery | We'll drive through the picturesque rural villages of the Homs Valley, heading to the renowned Jarjour winery, which is famous for its unique blue wine.

  Yemen and Socotra – one of the most extraordinary and unforgettable Koryo Tours journeys. Fifteen days through a country that almost no one visits, taking in two of the most visually distinctive landscapes in the Arab world. The mud-brick civilisation of the Hadhramaut valley, and the alien biology of Socotra Island.
  
  This tour to Yemen and Socotra runs in two parts. The first part of the tour covers mainland Yemen.
  We arrive at Seiyun in the heart of the Hadhramaut, where we’ll be met by our highly experienced team before starting our epic road trip throughout the country.
   
  The tour to mainland Yemen takes you from Seiyun to the legendary city of Shibam, also known as ‘the Manhattan of the Desert’ and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with mud-brick towers up to 40 metres tall. We will also travel to the sacred desert pilgrimage site of Qabr Hud and the Islamic scholarly city of Tarim with the tallest mud-brick minaret in the world. Before finishing the tour on the Arabian Sea Coast in Mukalla, we still have time to explore the extraordinary canyon landscape of Wadi Doan, where ancient villages cling to cliff faces and boulder tops above a valley floor of date palms.
  
  From Mukalla, we take a direct flight to Socotra Island, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in the Arabian Sea and a completely different landscape from anywhere else in the world, let alone mainland Yemen. We leave our luxury hotel accommodation and swap it for tents and camping. Here, over a third of plant species exist nowhere else on earth – and it’s best experienced by soaking up this nature completely. Campsites are a mix of beaches and Dragon Blood Forest plateaus, all under some of the clearest night skies in the world.
  
  Over a week on Socotra, we travel by 4x4s to complete a full island circuit. The turquoise lagoon at Detwah, the dragon blood tree forests of Dixam Plateau and Homhil, the southern dunes and beaches, the freshwater pools of Kalisan Canyon, the stalactite cave of Hoq and the coral gardens of Dihamri Marine Protected Area.

     Sacred sites and timeless villages

     • Qabr Hud | One of the most significant Muslim pilgrimage sites in the Arabian Peninsula, the tomb of the Prophet Hud sits in the desert 140km northeast of Seiyun. The site comprises a domed tomb high on the hillside, a prayer hall built around the great rock believed to be Hud’s camel turned to stone, and a pilgrimage town of whitewashed mud-brick houses entirely deserted for all but three days a year.
        
     • Traditional Lunch | Enjoy a traditional Yemeni lunch on the floor of a local restaurant.

     Tarim

     • Al-Muhdar Mosque | The tallest mud-brick minaret in the world, at 40 metres, rising above one of the great centres of Islamic learning in the Arab world.
        
     • Al-Ahqaf University & Library | One of the leading Islamic educational institutions in Yemen, with a major collection of Islamic manuscripts.
        
     • Historical Cemeteries | The cemeteries of Tarim, particularly Zanbal, contain the tombs of hundreds of Islamic scholars spanning more than a thousand years. The white domes rising from the desert floor are an unforgettable sight.

     • Drive into Wadi Doan, one of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in the Arabian Peninsula.

     • These extraordinary trees, with their flat-topped canopy formed by repeated branching and their trunk that bleeds deep red resin when cut, exist in this form only on Socotra. The plateau offers the finest views of the forest against the mountains and the sea.
        
     • Wadi Dirhur | A spectacular canyon of limestone walls and dragon blood trees.
        
     • Fermahin Forest | One of the densest dragon blood tree forests on the island, spectacular in the late afternoon light.

  Getting to Yemen

  The standard routing is Cairo to Seiyun (GXF) at the start, and Socotra (SCT) to Aden (ADE) to Cairo at the end. See the flight information document for scheduled days and airport details.

  Flights

  International flights are not included in the tour price. Koryo Tours can advise on flight options and assist with bookings on Yemenia Airlines. You may budget for approx. $800 USD for the return flights between Cairo and Yemen. Flights booked less than 3-months in advance may be considerably more expensive.

  Yemen Visas

  Yemen tourist visa and security clearance are included in the tour price and arranged on arrival at Seiyun. Socotra visa is waived for travellers arriving via domestic flight from mainland Yemen.

  Safety

  Police escorts accompany all mainland ground transportation. Both Koryo Tours and our local partners maintain active relationships with local security services and are in constant contact with authorities throughout. The tour operates in the southern Hadhramaut region and Socotra, both of which have maintained relative stability.

  Cultural attire

  Iraq is one of those rare places where history feels alive. Mesopotamia, Babylon, Baghdad... you may have read about it in history books. Now it's time to see the real thing. 

  This tour runs from Basra in the south to Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, combining ancient civilisations, living religious traditions, and a unique overnight experience in the UNESCO-listed Iraqi Marshes.

  We'll see the highlights as we make our way from south to north, as well as enjoying some unique cultural experiences as we go to give you the best, all-rounded experience of your time in Iraq. 

  Get to know the places and the people. 

  We begin in Basra, Iraq's southern port city, before travelling into the Iraqi Marshes for a night in a traditional reed house and a sunset boat trip. 

  Heading north, we visit ancient sites and holy sites, including Najaf and Karbala, before arriving in Baghdad to explore both its historic and modern sites, many monuments and beautiful riverside restaurants.

  We continue through northern Iraq to Mosul and the Christian town of Baghdida, before crossing into Iraqi Kurdistan for Yazidi heritage sites, dramatic mountain scenery, and Erbil's famous citadel.

     Basra Day Tour & Iraqi Marshes

     Basra Tour 

     • Day tour in the old city of Basra. 
     • Basra | This is the main southern city and its largest port. It has long been a gateway for trade, culture and ideas. Basra is also known for its canals lined with date palms!
     • Basra Museum | A look into the history of Basra and the surrounding areas. It used to be Saddam's Palace.
     • Tiger & Euphrates River | We will take a drive to the meeting point of the Tiger and the Euphrates River.
     • Adam's Tree | This is considered to be the Garden of Eden. 

     Iraqi Marshes

     • Travel to the Iraqi Marshes, where we will have a late lunch of Masquf, the Sumerian local fish (vegetarian option available).
     • Marshes | A UNESCO-listed wetland where life has changed little over millennia. The Marsh Arabs still live in traditional reed houses and travel by narrow boats along the waterways.
     • Boat trip in the Marshes | We take a boat trip for sunset, where we will go to a local Samarian-designed house in the middle of the marshes to spend the night.
     • Night in the Marshes | Enjoy an evening amongst the marshes where we will have snacks and a light dinner around the fire. We will have a fun evening of local music surrounded by nature

     Marshes to Najaf 

     • Local Sumerian breakfast of buffalo's cream and milk. After this, we will begin our drive north.
     • City of Ur | Visit the ancient city of Ur, where we will see the ancient Ziggurat Of Ur and the House of the Prophet Abraham. This 4,000-year-old city was once one of the most important Sumerian settlements. The Ziggurat of Ur, a massive stepped structure dominating the otherwise flat landscapes. According to tradition, this is the birthplace of Abraham. 
     • City of Nippur | Nippur was the religious capital of the Sumerians and one of the oldest cities in Mesopotamia. It was dedicated to Enlil, one of the chief deities in the Sumerian pantheon, and served as a major religious centre during the 3rd millennium BCE. 
     • Continue driving to the city of Najaf.

     Najaf

     Najaf City Tour 

     • Old City | Explore Najaf and Najaf's Old City, one of the most important cities of the Shia Muslim world. 
     • Wadi al Salam | We pay a visit to the largest cemetary in the world - Wadi al Salam. Meaning "Valley of Peace", it is located in Najaf and is the largest cemetary in the world. It has been a burial site for over 1,400 years. 
     • We then take a trip to the market where we can buy local clothes and Abayas, as well as lots of other souvenirs. You'll need this local attire to enter the shrine.
     • Imam Ali Shrine | The Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf is the burial site of Imam Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. The shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Shia Muslims. The golden dome of the Imam Ali Shrine draws pilgrims from across the globe. We will take a look inside the separate male/female sections, and you'll truly be astounded by the colours, lights, and decorations from this fantastic piece of architecture. 

     Cultural Afternoon

     • This afternoon we spend with a local family together at their house with various activities.
     • Homestay & Cooking Class | Return to our homestay for a cooking class where we will prepare and eat our lunch prepared by ourselves. 
     • Private River Chalet | Enjoy an afternoon of relaxation Iraq-style: with shisha, tea, and snacks in front of the river in our private rented chalet, including a swimming pool. 
     • Return to our homestay for the evening.

     Najaf to Karbala 

     • Kufa Mosque | Start the day by going to Kufa Mosque, the fourth-holiest place for Shia Muslims. It has historical and religious significance due to its association with Imam Ali and early Islamic history. 
     • Ezekiel Tomb | Visit the Ezekiel Tomb, where we will see old Hebrew writings. This town used to be shared between Jews and Muslims. It is believed to be the burial place of the biblical prophet Ezekiel, and the tomb is inscribed with Hebrew writings.
     • Daniel's Market | Explore the old market to Ezekiel Tomb, called Daniel's Market.
     • Ziggurat of Borsipa | Visit the Ziggurat of Borsipa, which is believed by many to be the Tower of Babel. 
     • Lunch at a local farm. 

     Babylon 

     • Ancient City of Babylon | Babylon was one of the most important cities of ancient Mesopotamia, known for its role as the capital of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar II. It is associated with significant cultural achievements, included the Code of Hammurabi and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders to the Ancient World. 
     • Saddam's Palace | Pay a visit to Saddam Hussein's palace and see the last remnant from his regime. From here, enjoy a great view of the ancient city. 
     • Drive to Karbala.

     Karbala

     • Karbala is a holy city for Shia Muslims and the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein. It is the focal point of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

     • Imam Hussein's Shrine | Visit Imam Hussein's shrine. Here, you will learn why it is one of the most important cities in Iraq religiously, with the largest annual gathering in the world. The shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala marks the burial place of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred at the Battle of Karbala in 680 BCE. 
     • Ctesiphon | Drive to Ctesiphon (Taq kisra), the second largest single-span unreinforced brickwork vault in the world. See the panoramic view from a building next to it that is abandoned. It was the capital of the Parthian and Sassanian empires. 
     • Drive to Baghdad.
     • Enjoy an evening walk and dinner in front of the Tiger River.

     • Iraqi National Museum | Visit the Iraqi National Museum to get introduced to Iraqi culture and history throughout the years. The Iraqi National Museum houses a vast collection of artefacts from Mesopotamian civilisations, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian relic. It is considered one of the most important museums in the Middle East. 
     • Mutanabi Street & Old Baghdad | Explore the old part of Baghdad. We will go to Mutanabi Street, known as the Book Street, the antique market, and the old copper market. It is named after the 10th-century poet Al-Mutanabi. 
     • Tea & Coffee stop in Baghdad | One of Baghdad's mots famous tea and coffee shops. Stop here for some lemon tea or shisha!
     • Mustansiriya School | We will also visit Mustansiriya School, one of the oldest remaining schools in the world. The Mustansiriya Madrasa was established in the 13th century. It served as an important educational institution during the Abbasid era.
     • Baghdad Green Zone | Drive through Baghdad's Green Zone. 
     • Save the Iraqi Culture Monument | A monument dedicated towards Iraqi culture and history. 
     • Martyrs Monument | Go for sunset to the Martyrs Monument. The Martyrs Monument in Baghdad is a large blue-domed structure built in 1980s to commemorate Iraqis who died in past wars. It is a symbol of national rememberance. 
     • Dinner in the new part of Baghdad.

     Samara & Ashur 

     Baghdad to Mosul 

     • Depart from Baghdad north to Samara.
     • The Great Mosque of Samara | Built in the 9th century, it is famous for its spiral minaret, known as the Malwiya Tower. The structure is one of the most distinctive examples of Abbasid architecture. It used to be the largest in the world at its time. 
     • Continue our way north and have lunch and a break. 
     • Travel to the ancient city of Ashur. 
     • Ashur | Ashur was the first capital of the Assyrian Empire and a significant religious centre. Its ruins, including temples and palace foundations, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was the capital of the Assyrians and one of the oldest cities in human history.
     • Continue our drive to Mosul.

     Mosul & Baghdida 

     • Mosul City Tour | Start the day with a tour in the old city of Mosul, where we will see a lot of destruction from the time of ISIS, including churches, mosques, and old neighbourhoods. We will also see the Hidba Minaret, which is the icon of Mosul. This was destroyed by ISIS and rebuilt by UNESCO.
     • Nori Mosque | This is where they announced the Islamic caliphate by Abu Bakal al Baghdadi.

     Baghdida

     • Baghdida | We visit Baghdida, one of the last Christian communities in Iraq. Here we will visit Tahira Church, which was the largest church in the Middle East during the 1940s.
     • In the evening, we will spend time in a local bar enjoying local liquor and a small gathering, and spend the night in the town.

      • Lalish | Drive to Lalish, the holiest site of the Yazidi religion, located in a mountain valley and a pilgrimage destination for Yazidis worldwide.
      • Rawanduz Valley | Continue to the valley of Rawanduz, one of the most scenic places in Iraq, known for dramatic gorges, mountains, and landscapes popular for hiking and photography.

  On this trip, we aim to see as much as possible in a very short amount of time. Iraq has a lot of history on offer, so of course we want to make the most out of this trip. Because of that, the days may be long and it involves a lot of driving as we make our way from south to north.

  Accommodation for both the marshes and the homestay will be the local-style thin mattresses either in tents or on the floor. We can provide private tents in the marshes but the homestay may not be able to accommodate for private rooms.   Heading north, we pass through Maaloula, where the ancient Aramaic language still lives on, and visit its breathtaking Mar Musa Monastery, perched high in the mountains. In Hama, the great waterwheels turn as they have for centuries - before our tour to Syria arrives in Aleppo.

  Once the rival of Damascus as the oldest continuously inhabited city, Aleppo is full of contrasts: historic citadels, restored markets, and the poignant scars of war. Highlights here include visiting the traditional Aleppo Soap factories (home to the world's largest soap!), and watching the sunset from a secret lookout before feasting on falafel, said to be the best in the world.

  Our Syria tour then takes us west toward the coast to Lattakia. Along the way, we’ll stop at the mighty Citadel of Salah ad-Din, before continuing to Burj Islam’s rocky beaches. We also visit the ancient ruins of Ugarit (where the world’s first alphabet was discovered) and the mighty Crusader stronghold of Marqab Castle.

  We then make a stop at Tartous and Syria's only island - Arwad Island.

  Of course, no tour to Syria would be complete without Krak des Chevaliers, described by Lawrence of Arabia as “the most wholly admirable castle in the world.” In Homs, where we’ll see both Islamic and Christian landmarks and experience the resilience of a city that has endured so much.

  And saving perhaps the most iconic site of all to last - Palmyra.

  Once a key Silk Road site and home to Queen Zenobia’s short-lived empire. Unfortunately, it was largely destroyed by ISIS, but there is still plenty to explore. We wander through its great colonnades, amphitheatre, and temples. And round it all off by enjoying lunch in a Bedouin tent restaurant, hosted by a local family.

  Our tour to Syria ends with a visit to Bosra al-Sham, home to the world’s best-preserved Roman theatre.

     Into Syria

     Beirut to Damascus Scenic Drive

     • We will leave early from the Lebanese capital on a scenic drive to the Syrian border, and onward to Damascus. This is a ca. 4-hour-long drive, including formalities at the Lebanon-Syria border.
        
     • Check in and a short recharge at our hotel in Damascus.

     The Historic Old Town of Damascus

     • Ananias Church | The oldest underground structure of Damascus and the presumed remains of Ananias of Damascus' home, where Saul was baptised, who is known today as Paul the Apostle.
        
     • Straight Street | Also known by its Latin name, Via Recta, is the Roman street that runs from East to West in Damascus' Old Town. The street has several sites dating back to the Roman, Christian, and Islamic periods, and according to the Book of Acts, St. Paul also visited here.
        
     • Al Nofara | The oldest café in Damascus, where we will listen to the famous storyteller.
        
     • Dinner will be at Naerj, the best restaurant in Damascus Old Town, where you are guaranteed to have one of the best meals of your life.

     Damascus City Tour

     • National Museum | Here, we will gain an overview of the civilisations that have thrived on Syrian soil. It exhibits statues, seals, jewellery, masks, mosaics, tablets, and weavings from the most important sites in the country.
        
     • Handicraft Market | Home to some of the finest handmade goods in
       the Middle East.
        
     • Souk Al-Hamidiye | The most beautiful souk of Damascus. Its shops display a wide range of goods, including clothes, fabrics, pastries, and handicrafts.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | A historic site of worship, dating back to the first millennium BCE, it was once a church and is now one of the most important mosques in the World.
        
     • Azem Palace | A beautifully preserved example of a traditional Damascene house turned Ottoman-era museum.
        
     • Ghouta Area | A site of chemical weapons attack by the Assad regime, a poignant reminder of the region's history and the resilience of its people.
        
     • Mount Qasioun | The highest peak in Damascus, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city. We will also discover some hidden gems in the city, such as Al Qashleh Café, known for its vibrant atmosphere and popularity with Syria's younger crowd.
        
     • Speakeasy | Additionally, we will stop by The Barber Shop, the only speakeasy place in Syria, offering a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

     Damascus to Aleppo

     Maaloula

     • The first stop on the route to Aleppo will be Maaloula, a small Christian town that suffered immense destruction by ISIS in 2014. Despite this, it remains one of the most scenic villages in Syria and is the only place in the world where Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus, is still actively used as a living language.

     Mar Musa

     • Our second stop along the road will be Mar Musa, a breathtaking 6^th-century monastery perched among rugged mountains.
        
     • Shaped like a towering fortress, this ancient site was founded by Mar Musa al-Habashi (Saint Moses of Abyssinia), who, according to legend, was the son of an Ethiopian king.

     Hama

     • Our last stop before reaching Aleppo will be Hama, where we'll visit the iconic waterwheels that once played a crucial role in providing water to the surrounding land. These ancient structures are a symbol of the city’s rich history.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo has been a flourishing metropolis since the 3^rd millennium BCE. The city has been fighting with Damascus for the title of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city.
        
     • After some exploring of the city, we'll enjoy dinner at Qurtuba, a renowned Syrian restaurant run by an Armenian family, known for its authentic flavours and warm atmosphere.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo Castle | Located in the middle of the city, the castle dominates Aleppo from a height of fifty meters. Its admirably designed towers, along with its iron gates, are distinguished by their entrances made with perfection to prevent any enemy intrusion.
        
     • Aleppo Market | Stretching from the front of the castle to the old city, we'll witness the contrast between the destroyed areas, the active restoration sites, and the fully renovated section, which now looks stunning.
        
     • Abu Hagoub Restaurant | As Aleppo is renowned for its spicy sausage, we will have lunch at this famous restaurant to sample the best sausage sandwiches in the city.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | The largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city, which is currently in the final stages of restoration.
        
     • Al-Jubaili Soap Factory | The oldest soap factory in Aleppo, where you'll have the opportunity to witness the traditional process of crafting the world-famous laurel Aleppo soap, renowned for its quality and history. We will also visit a soap exhibition where you can touch the largest bar of soap in the world, according to the Guinness World Records Book.
        
     • For sunset, we will visit one of our secret spots overlooking Aleppo.
        
     • Uncle Hamido's Restaurant | For dinner, we will get the chance to taste what is often hailed as the best falafel in the World.

     Aleppo to Lattakia

     • Idlib Governorate | Here, we can observe a unique economic system distinct from other regions, and we will also visit the refugee camps, gaining insight into the challenges faced by displaced families.
        
     • Citadel of Salah ad-Din | Syria’s most breathtaking castle, majestically perched on a rocky hill, offering panoramic views of the surrounding green mountains. One of its most remarkable features is a manually excavated moat, a testament to the dedication and skill of its builders.
        
     • This historic fortress has witnessed the influence of multiple civilisations, from the Phoenicians and Byzantines to the Crusaders and the era of Saladin.
        
     • Lattakia | This is where the sea meets the lush green mountains, and it has a lively urban atmosphere.
        
     • Upon arrival, we will explore the city and take in its unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture.

     Lattakia to Tartous

     • Burj Islam | An area renowned for its stunning rocky beaches and crystal-clear blue waters. This picturesque coastal spot also features a breathtaking sea cave, offering a unique and serene natural escape.

     UGARIT

     • Ugarit | A historic coastal town north of Lattakia. Ugarit gained fame with the discovery of clay tablets bearing the world’s oldest known consonantal alphabet.
        
     • The earliest settlement, a large fortified village, dates back to the 8^th millennium BCE. Later, two immense palaces were constructed, containing archives and literary texts that reveal an astonishing diversity of languages and five distinct writing systems, including the Ugaritic script from the 14^th century BCE.
        
     • Marqab Castle | Also known as Margat, a historic Crusader fortress near Baniyas.
        
     • As one of the major strongholds of the Knights Hospitaller, who also controlled Krak des Chevaliers, the two castles communicated via smoke signals or mirrors through Chastel-Blanc (Safita), a smaller intermediary fortress. Perched on a hilltop, Marqab Castle offers breathtaking views of the coastline.
        
     • Tartous | A vibrant city that blends seamlessly with the sea.
     • Tartous is renowned for its lively seafront, lined with dozens of cafés and restaurants offering stunning views and a relaxing ambience.

     Tartous to Homs

     • Arwad Island | The only island in Syria. Known for its charming narrow alleys and small houses enclosed within ancient walls.
        
     • Measuring approximately 800 meters in length and 500 meters in width, the Phoenicians settled the island in the early 2^nd millennium BCE. Today, Arwad is renowned for its handmade shipbuilding and thriving fishing industry.
        
     • Amrit | A Phoenician temple, located in Tartous Governorate, dating back to the 3^rd millennium BCE.
        
     • Its unique design features a central altar accessible only by boat, as it is surrounded by water within the temple grounds. The site reflects the grandeur of the Phoenician civilisation along the Syrian coast. Notably, an Olympic stadium is situated nearby.

     • Krak des Chevaliers | This castle was described by Lawrence of Arabia as "the most wholly admirable castle in the world."
        
     • In addition, this medieval crusader fortress is one of the most significant and well-preserved castles from that era, offering a fascinating glimpse into Syrian History.

     • Homs | The most affected city by the war.
     • During our visit, we'll explore the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Shrine and the St. Mary Church of the Holy Belt, two significant landmarks of the city.

     Homs to Damascus

     Palmyra

     • Syria's most iconic tourist destination. Notably, once a key city on the Silk Road, Palmyra briefly ruled its own empire in the 3rd century, stretching from Turkey to Egypt.
        
     • However, despite being well-preserved, much of the city was sadly destroyed during the ISIS occupation in 2015.
        
     • During our tour, we will explore what remains, including the Arch of Triumph, Fakhr ad-Din al-Maani Castle, the Sulphur Spring, the Great Columns, the Theatre, the Agora, and the Tombs.
        
     • We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in a traditional Bedouin tent restaurant, run by a local family. This is, indeed, a perfect opportunity to savour authentic Syrian cuisine while experiencing the warm hospitality of the region.

     Return to Damascus

     • We will drive back to Damascus, arriving just in time to enjoy a relaxing dinner in the city.

      Bosra Al Sham

      • Shrine of Sayyida Zaynab | An important Mosque for Shiaa followers.
         
      • Bosra al-Sham | We will drive south through the lush, fertile plains to this ancient city, home to the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world. We'll explore the city’s rich Roman heritage, including its baths and captivating historical tales.
         
      • Meanwhile, while in the region, we’ll also have the chance to enjoy the renowned Malihi dish, a local speciality.
         
      • After returning to Damascus, we'll wrap up the journey with a memorable final night out.
         
      • Cooking Class | Our last program for the day will be a cooking class and dinner with a Syrian family.

• Overall

  Iraq is one of thise rare places where history feels alive - from the Abbasid legacy of Baghdad to the pilgrimage cities of Najaf and Karbala. This is a short tour packed with depth, taking you to the highlights of federal Iraq whilst also offering the unique opportunity to spend a night in the Iraqi Marshes. 

  This itinerary focuses on central and southern Iraq, combining culture, religion and history - both ancient and modern. 

  We begin and end in Baghdad, with time to explore the city's museums, markets, and historic quarters.

  Between Baghdad stays, we visit Karbala and Najaf - two of the most significant cities in the Shia Muslim world - before travelling south to spend a night in a traditional reed house in the Iraqi Marshes. 

  Between the modern cities, we will visit remote ancient cities - such as the Ziggurat Of Ur dating back to 5000 BC, Uruk - the birthplace of the first written language, and Ctsesiphon - the world's oldest free-standing arch.

This museum houses a vast collection of artefacts from Mesopotamian civilisations, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian relics. It is considered one of the most important museums in the Middle East.
     • Mutanabi Street and Old Baghdad | Explore the old part of Baghdad. Visit Mutanabi Street, known as the Book Street, along with the antique market and the old copper market. It is named after the 10th-century poet Al-Mutanabi.
     • Tea and Coffee Stop in Old Baghdad | Stop at one of Baghdad’s most famous tea and coffee shops for lemon tea or shisha! 
     • Mustansiriya School | Visit Mustansiriya School, one of the oldest remaining schools in the world. The Mustansiriya Madrasa was established in the 13th century and served as an important educational institution during the Abbasid era.
     • Baghdad Green Zone | Drive through Baghdad’s Green Zone.
     • Save the Iraqi Culture Monument | Visit a monument dedicated to Iraqi culture and history.

It is associated with significant cultural achievements, including the Code of Hammurabi and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
     • Saddam’s Palace | Visit Saddam Hussein's palace and see a remnant from his regime. From here, enjoy amazing views over the ancient city.

     Karbala

     • Karbala is a holy city for Shia Muslims and the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein. It is the focal point of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
     • Imam Hussein’s Shrine | Visit Imam Hussein’s Shrine. Here you will learn why it is once of the most important cities in Iraq religiously, with the largest annual gathering in the world. The shrine also marks the burial place of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, martyred at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.

     • Ezekiel Tomb | Visit the Ezekiel Tomb, where it is believed to be the burial place of the biblical prophet Ezekiel. The site contains old Hebrew inscriptions and was historically shared by Jewish and Muslim communities.
     • Daniel’s Market | Explore the old market next to the tomb, called Daniel's Market.
     • Ziggurat of Borsippa | Visit the Ziggurat of Borsippa, which is believed by many to be the Tower of Babel.

     Najaf City Tour

     • Old City | Explore Najaf and its Old City, one of the most important cities in the Shia Muslim world.
     • Wadi al Salam | Visit Wadi al Salam - the largest cemetery in the world. Meaning "Valley of Peace", it is located in Najaf and it has been a burial site for over 1,400 years.
     • Market Visit | We will then visit the market to buy local clothes, abayas, and souvenirs. You'll need this local attire to enter the Imam Ali Shrine.
     • Imam Ali Shrine | Visit the Imam Ali Shrine, the burial site of Imam Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. It is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Shia Muslims. We will take a look inside the seperated female/male sections and you'll truly be astounded by the colours, lights, and decirations from this fantastic piece of architecture.
     • Kufa Mosque | Visit Kufa Mosque, the fourth holiest site for Shia Muslims, associated with Imam Ali and early Islamic history.

     Najaf to the Iraqi Marshes

     Iraqi Marshes & Overnight Stay 

     • City of Ur | Visit the ancient city of Ur, including the Ziggurat Of Ur and the House of the Prophet Abraham. This 4,000-year-old city was one of the most important Sumerian settlements. The Ziggurat of Ur itself is an impressive stepped structure which dominates the otherwise flat landscape. According to tradition, this is the birthplace of Abraham.
     • Travel to the Iraqi Marshes for a late lunch of masquf, which is Sumerian traditional grilled fish (vegetarian option available).
     • Iraqi Marshes | Visit the UNESCO-listed wetlands where the Marsh Arabs still live in traditional reed houses and travel by narrow boats along the waterways.
     • Boat Trip in the Marshes | Take a sunset boat trip and visit a local Samarian-designed reed house in the middle of the marshes where we will spend the night.
     • Night in the Marshes | Enjoy an evening amongst the marshes where we will have snacks, a light dinner around the fire, and local music all while being surrounded by nature.

• Overall

  A tour to Socotra is one you are unlikely to forget any time soon. Socotra Island is unlike anywhere else on earth. The dragon blood trees with their flat-topped canopies look like something from a science fiction film. The lagoons are the kind of turquoise that makes you question whether you’re looking at a postcard or not. And the night sky, in this far corner of the Indian Ocean, is astonishing.

  Socotra Island remains largely undiscovered, and travelling to Socotra requires an adventurous spirit. Camping for a week in some very rural but incredible landscapes, few showers and some of the most freshly prepared seafood you could wish for.

  But the secret won’t stay kept for much longer… 

  Socotra Island sits in the Arabian Sea east of the Horn of Africa, south of the Arabian Peninsula. It belongs to Yemen, but geographically, biologically, and politically isolated for so long that it has evolved a unique ecosystem and has been spared from war and conflict, meaning it is completely safe to visit.

  Over a third of its plant species exist nowhere else on earth, a level comparable only to the Galapagos Islands. The most famous of these is Dracaena cinnabari, the dragon blood tree, whose inverted-umbrella silhouette has made it one of the most recognisable plants in the world. UNESCO recognised the island as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2008.

  This week-long tour to Socotra covers a full circuit of the island. We will travel Socotra in the best way possible – by 4WD over scenic coastal roads and rugged mountain passes, camping on beaches and in protected areas throughout.

  The route for this Socotra tour takes in the western lagoon at Detwah, the dragon blood tree forests of Dixam Plateau and Homhil, the sand dunes and beaches of the southern coast, the freshwater pools of Kalisan Canyon, the stalactite cave of Hoq, and the coral gardens of the Dihamri Marine Protected Area.

  We will also spend some time in Hadibo, the capital city of Socotra Island. Here, we will have a chance to walk around the city and do some shopping. 

  The pace of this Socotra tour is unhurried - but spectacular, soaking up the atmosphere of island life. We sleep camping under open sky, travelling with a team of private chefs and local guides and drivers, and you can expect an experience of complete immersion in a landscape that feels entirely separate from the rest of the world.

     Arrival in Socotra

     • Arrival at Socotra Airport (SCT) by Yemenia Airlines flight from Jeddah-King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED). Meet our local team and load gear into 4WDs to start our expedition.

     Ayhaft National Park

     • Ayhaft National Park | Drive through otherworldly landscapes to Ayhaft National Park, a biodiversity hotspot where dragon's blood trees stand like ancient sentinels. Trek through wadis filled with endemic plants, then cool off in natural freshwater pools.
        
     • Delisha Beach | As the sun dips low, continue to Delisha Beach, where powdery white sands meet turquoise waters.
        
     • Camp Set Up & Dinner | We will set up our beachfront camp, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and rest under the stars.

     Dihamri Marine Protected Area

     • Dihamri Marine Protected Area | Head to the finest snorkelling site on Socotra and one of the best in the Arabian Sea, featuring hard and soft coral gardens in excellent condition. Look out for parrotfish, clownfish, moray eels, octopus, and sea turtles. Bring snorkelling equipment or rent locally.
        
     • Local Fishing Village | Visit a nearby fishing village to learn about ancient Socotri maritime traditions and connect with locals.
        
     • Camp Set Up & Beachside Dinner | Set up camp right on the protected beach and fall asleep to the lullaby of gentle waves. A good relaxing night is needed for the big trek to the cave the following day.

     Hoq Cave, Ersal Beach & Arher Dunes

     Ancient inscriptions and surreal coastal landscapes

     • Hoq Cave | Embark on a 45-minute hike to reach a vast stalactite cave on the northeastern coast. See ancient inscriptions in Palmyrene, South Arabian, Brahmi, and Indian scripts left by traders and pilgrims of the ancient incense routes. One of the most atmospheric sites on the island.
        
     • Ersal Beach | Visit a secluded cove of crystal-clear water surrounded by towering granite cliffs.
        
     • Arher Beach & Dunes | Explore a unique beach where freshwater springs emerge from towering sand dunes and run across the sand straight into the sea.
        
     • Dune Climb | Climb the famous giant dunes of Arher Beach for sunset and incredible views across the island – if you dare!
        
     • Beachside Bonfire & Dinner | Wind down with a beachside bonfire and dinner under the stars before resting at the campsite.

     • Camp & Stargazing | Set up camp at Omaq Beach on the southern coast. Spend the evening stargazing beneath the extraordinarily clear skies of this remote part of the Indian Ocean, followed by dinner.

     Dixam Plateau, Dragon Blood Trees & Fermahin Forest

     The most iconic landscape on the island

     • Detwah Lagoon Swim | Early swim in the lagoon before departure.
        
     • Dixam Plateau | The high plateau of central Socotra where the dragon blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari) grow most densely and most dramatically.
        
     • These extraordinary trees, with their flat-topped canopy formed by repeated branching and their trunk that bleeds deep red resin when cut, exist in this form only on Socotra. The plateau offers the finest views of the forest against the mountains and the sea.

     • Detwah Protected Area | Drive west to Qalancia and the Detwah Protected Area, a large turquoise lagoon separated from the Arabian Sea by a strip of white sand, surrounded by limestone mountains.Qalansiya & Shuab Beach | Drive to the fishing village of Qalansiya and board traditional boats for a trip to Shuab Beach.
        
     • Boat Trip | Watch for dolphins playing in the wake. Explore sea caves and snorkel in pristine waters before returning for your final night camping on the island.
        
     • Lagoon Swimming | Return to Detwah to enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon.
        
     • Camp Set Up & Dinner | Set up camp for your final night and enjoy a farewell beachside dinner.

  This trip is based on entry through Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. International flights are not included. Schedules are published a few months in advance. The return flight between Jeddah-King Abdulaziz International Airport (JED) and Socotra (SCT) costs approx. $750 USD to $900 USD.

  Tour Dates

  The dates for this trip are as per the current scheduling from Jeddah. Should this change in the coming months, the dates of the trip may shift slightly.   Accommodation

  We begin in Basra, Iraq's storied port city on the Shatt al-Arab, easing into the local life with a waterfront evening and welcome dinner. From here we head into the UNESCO-listed Iraqi Marshes, where life still follows the rhythms of the waterways. You'll cruise by boat at sunset and spend the night in a traditional reed-house guest stay. This is a unique opportunity to experience one of the Middle East's most unique cultural landscapes.

A special highlight of this trip is an immersive cultural afternoon in Najaf with a local family, including a hands-on cooking experience and time to relax Iraq-style by the river before spending the night in a homestay. 

  From there, we spend the night in Baghdad. A city of poets, markets and rebirth. Explore the Iraqi National Museum and wander the bookstalls of Mutanabbi Street. Then it's north to Samarra and the ancient Assyrian capital of Ashur, before arriving in Mosul to understand the city's layered history and extraordinary recovery. We also visit Baghdida, one of Iraq's most important Christian towns. 

  The final chapter to your epic journey is Iraqi Kurdistan. A complete shift in landscape and atmosphere. Visit Lalish, the holiest site of the Yazidi faith, explore mountain towns like Amedi, and take in the dramatic scenery of Rawanduz Valley. 

  We will enjoy the best that Iraqi Kurdistan has to offer in terms of its nature and history, as we cruise across Dokan Lake, delve into Kurdish history at Sulaymaniyah's museums, and visit Halabja to better understand the region's modern story.

     Basra Day Tour & the Iraqi Marshes 

     Basra Tour 

     • Day tour in the old city of Basra
     • Basra | This is the main southern city and its largest port. It has been a gateway for trade, culture, and ideas. Basra is also known for its canals lined with date palms! 
     • Basra Museum | A look into the history of Basra and the surrounding areas. It used to be Saddam's Palace. 
     • Tiger and Euphrates River | We will take a drive to the meeting point of the Tiger and the Euphrates River 
     • Adam's Tree | This is considered to be the Garden of Eden 

     Iraqi Marshes

     • Travel to the Iraqi Marshes, where we will have a late lunch of Masquf - the Sumerian local fish (vegetarian options available!)
     • Iraqi Marshes | A UNESCO-listed wetland where life has changed little over the millennia. The Marsh Arabs still live in traditional reed houses and travel by narrow boats along the waterways. 
     • Boat Trip in the Marshes | We take a boat trip for sunset, where we will go to a local Samarian-designed house in the middle of the marshes to spend the night. 
     • Night in the Marshes | Enjoy an evening amongst the marshes where we have snacks and a light dinner around the fires. We will have a fun evening of local music surrounded by nature.

     Marshes to Najaf 

     • Local Sumerian breakfast of buffalo's cream and milk. After this, we will begin our drive north. 
     • City of Ur | Visit the ancient city of Ur, where we will see the ancient Ziggurat Of Ur and the House of the Prophet Abraham. This 4,000-year-old was once one of the most important Sumerian settlements. The Ziggurat of Ur, a massive stepped structure dominating the otherwise flat landscapes. According to tradition, this is the birthplace of Abraham. 
     • City of Nippur | Nippur was the religious capital of the Sumerians and one of the oldest cities in Mesopotamia. It was dedicated to Enlil, one of the chief dieties in the Sumerian pantheon, and served as a major religious centre during the 3rd millennium BCE. 
     • Continue driving to the city of Najaf.

     Najaf 

     Najaf City Tour 

     • Old City | Explore Najaf and Najaf's Old City, one of the most important cities in the Shia Muslim world. 
     • Wadi al Salam | We pay a visit to the largest cemetary in the world - Wadi al Salam. Meaning "Valley of Peace", it is located in Najaf and is the largest cemetary in the world. It has been a burial site for over 1,400 years. 
     • We then take a trip to the market where we can buy local clothes and Abayas, as well as lots of other souvenirs. You'll need this local attire to enter the shrine. 
     • Imam Ali Shrine | The Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf is the burial site of Imam Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. The shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Shia Muslim. The golden dome of the Imam Ali Shrine draws pilgrims from across the globe. We will take a look inside the separate female/male sections, and you'll truly be astounded by the colours, lights, and decorations from this fantastic piece of architecture. 

     Cultural Afternoon

     • This afternoon we spend with a local family together at their house with various activities.
     • Homestay and Cooking Class | Return to our homestay for a cooking class where we will prepare and eat our lunch prepared by ourselves. 
     • Private River Chalet | Enjoy an afternoon of relaxation Iraq-style: with shisha, tea and snacks in front of the river in our private rented chalet, including a swimming pool.

     Najaf to Karbala 

     • Kufa Mosque | Start the day by going to Kufa Mosque, the fourth-holiest place for Shia Muslims. It has historical and religious significance due to its association with Imam Ali and early Islamic history.
     • Ezekiel Tomb | Visit Ezekiel Tomb, where we will see old Hebrew writings. This town used to be shared between Jews and Muslims. It is believed to be the burial place of the biblical prophet Ezekiel, and the tomb is inscribed with Hebrew writings. 
     • Daniel's Market | Explore the old market next to Ezekiel Tomb, called Daniel's Market. 
     • Ziggurat of Borsipa | Visit the Ziggurat of Borsipa, which is believed by many to be the Tower of Babel. 
     • Lunch at a local farm

     Babylon

     • Ancient City of Babylon | Babylon was one of the most important cities of ancient Mesopotamia, known for its role as the capital of Hammurabi and Nebuchnezzar II. It is associated with significant cultural achievements, including the Code of Hammurabi and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
     • Saddam's Palace | Pay a visit to Saddam Hussein's palace and see the remnants of his regime. From here, enjoy a great view of the ancient city. 
     • Drive to Karbala.

     Karbala

     • Karbala is a holy city for Shia Muslims and the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein. It is the focal point of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

     Karbala to Baghdad

     • Imam Hussein’s Shrine | Visit Imam Hussein’s shrine. Here, you will learn why it is one of the most important cities in Iraq, religiously, with the largest annual gathering in the world. The shrine of Imam Hussein in Karbala marks the burial place of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was martyred at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE.
     • Ctesiphon | Drive to Ctesiphon (Taq kisra), the second largest single-span unreinforced brickwork vault in the world. See the panoramic view from a building next to it that is abandoned. It was the capital of the Parthian and Sassanian empires.
     • Drive to Baghdad.
     • Enjoy an evening walk and dinner in front of the Tiger River.

     • Iraqi National Museum | Visit the Iraqi National Museum to get introduced to Iraqi culture and history throughout the years. The Iraqi National Museum houses a vast collection of artefacts from Mesopotamian civilisations, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian relics. It is considered one of the most important museums in the Middle East. 
     • Mutanabi Street and Old Baghdad | Explore the old part of Baghdad. We will go to Mutanabi Street, known as Book Street, the antique market, and the old copper market. It is named after the 10th century poet Al-Mutanabi. 
     • Tea and Coffee stop in Old Baghdad | One of Baghdad's most famous tea and coffee shops. Stop here for some lemon tea or shisha!
     • Mustansiriya School | We will also visit Mustansiriya School, one of the oldest remaining schools in the world. The Mustansiriya Madrasa was established in the 13th century. It served as an important educational institution during the Abbasid era. 
     • Baghdad Green Zone | Drive through Baghdad's Green Zone. 
     • Save the Iraqi Culture Movement | A monument dedicated towards Iraqi culture and history. 
     • Martyrs Monument | Go for sunset to the Martyrs Monument in Baghdad is a large blue-domed structure built in the 1980s to commemorate Iraqis who died in past wars. It is a symbol of rememberence. 
     • Dinner in the new part of Baghdad.

     • Great Mosque of Samarra | Built in the 9th century, it is famous for its spiral minaret, known as the Malwiya Tower. The structure is one of the most distinctive examples of Abbasid architecture. It used to be the largest in the world at its time. 
     • Continue our way north and have lunch and a break. 

     Ashur

     • Ashur | Ashur was the first capital of the Assyrian Empire and a significant religious centre. Its ruins, including temples and palace foundations, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was the capital of the Assyrians and one of the oldest cities in human history.
     • Continue our drive to Mosul

  9. November 13 | Friday 

     Mosul and Baghdida 

     • Mosul City Tour | Start the day with a tour in the old city of Mosul, where we will see a lot of destruction from the time of ISIS, including churches, mosques, and old neighbourhoods. We will also see the Hidba Minaret, which is the icon of Mosul. This was destroyed by ISIS and rebuilt by UNESCO. 
     • Nori Mosque | Where they announced the Islamic caliphate by Abu Bakal al Baghdadi. 

     Baghdida

     • Baghdida | We visit one of the last Christian communities in Iraq, the Town of Baghdida, where we will visit Tahira Church, which used to be the largest church in the Middle East in the 1940s. 
     • We will spend the evening in one of the local bars, having liquor, a small party and spending the night in the town. 

     Accommodation | Guesthouse in Baghdida. This is a rarely visited town in Iraq without any hotels. We will stay in local apartment-style accommodation.

      Bashiqa, Lalish, Armedi & Iraqi Kurdistan 

       Exploring Yazidi Religion 

      • Bashiqa | Today we will travel to the city of Bashiqa, home to the Yazidis, Christians and Muslims, where we will be able to see Yazidi temples. The town is famous for local Araq and beer. 
      • We will continue our drive into Iraqi Kurdistan. 

      Iraqi Kurdistan 

      • Lalish | Drive to Lalish, the holiest place for the Yazidi religion in the middle of the mountains. The temple complex, located in a mountain valley, is a pilgrimage destination for Yazidis worldwide. 
      • Duhok | Have a rest stop at the Martyr's cafe and have a walk around the city. Duhok is a lively regional city surrounded by mountains, serving as a gateway to northern Iraqi Kurdistan. It has grown rapidly in recent decades and combines modern infrastructure with traditional Kurdish culture. 
      • Amedi | 'The town that will never expand'. The walls enclose this city have been standing for years. Enjoy the fresh air as we visit this beautiful place of nature and history. One of the most elevated towns in Iraq, its history also stretches back thousands of years with layers of Assyrian, Median, Persian, and Islamic influence.

      • Amedi | Explore the old town and old gates. 
      • Barzan | Enjoy the nature of Barzan. One of the famous towns for the establishment of the Kurdistan region. It is closely associated with the Barzani family and the Kurdish national movement. 

      Shanadar Cave 

      • Shanadar Cave | Shanadar Cave is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Middle East. Famous for the discovery of Neanderthal remains, it has transformed how scientists understand early human behaviour, including evidence suggesting ritual burial and social care. You can watch the Netflix documentary all about this cave and the discoveries made here! 
      • Continue driving to the valley of Rawanaduz, one of the most scenic places in Iraq. A day of mountains and waterfalls!

      Rwanduz

      • The Rawanduz Valley | Famous for its dramatic gorges, mountains, and landscapes. It is a popular location for hiking and photography. 
      • We will spend the night in a hotel overlooking the valley.

      • Dokan Lake and Dam | A scenic lake where we will enjoy a boat tour on the lake. Dokan Lake is on of the most scenic spots in Iraqi Kurdistan. Created by the Dokan Dam in the 1950s, the lake is surrounded by rolling hills and open skies. 
      • Arrival in Sulimania.

      Sulimania 

      Often described as the cultural capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, Sulaymaniyah is known for its heritage, lively cafes, art scene, and political history. Founded in the late 18th century, it has long been a centre of Kurdish intellectual life. 

      • Sulimania Museum | Historic artefacts from the region. One of the largest museums in the Kurdistan Region, the Sulaymaniyah Museum houses artefacts spanning prehistoric, ancient, and Islamic periods. Exhibits include statues, reliefs, inscriptions, and everyday objects from across northern Mesopotamia. 
      • Roman Theater | Explore the Roman Theater at sunset. A reminder of how far Roman influence once extended into Mesopotamia. Though partially ruined, the site is atmospheric, particularly at sunset, when the surrounding hills glow in soft light. 
      • Dinner in Sulimania.

      Halabja & Iraq-Iran Border 

      Halabja 

      Halabja is a quiet town with a tragic place in modern history. In March 1988, it was the site of the deadliest chemical weapons attack ever carried out against a civilian population, killing thousands of people in a matter of hours. 

      • Our first stop from Sulimania will take us to Halabja.
      • Halabja Museum | Dedicated to the victims who died in the chemical attack conducted by Saddam Hussein during the Iraq-Iran war. 

      Byara 

      A small mountain town set in the dramatic landscapes near the Iranian border. Surrounded by rugged hills and valleys, it offers a glimpse into traditional Kurdish rural life and the natural beauty of the Hawraman region.

      • We then carry on our drive to the Iraq-Iran border where we can take a walk around and enjoy tea on the border with Iran. 
      • Drive back to Sulimania. 
      • Sulimaniya Red Museum | Also known as Amna Suraka, the Red Museum is one of the most powerful and confronting sites in Iraqi Kurdistan. This former intelligence prison was used by Saddam Hussein's regime to detain, torture, and execute Kurdish political prisoners. Today, the complex has been transformed into a memorial museum documenting the Anfal campaign, political repression, and Kurdish resistance. You can see preserved prison cells, execution chambers, personal belongings of prisoners, and striking visual installations, including walls still marked by bullet holes from the 1991 uprising. 
      • Final exploration in Sulimaniya.

      • Erbil Citadel | We will go to the market that is next to Erbil Citadel, one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the citadel dominates the centre of Erbil and is surrounded by traditional markets and cafes. 
      • Enjoy an evening in the market's local cafe overlooking the main square of Erbil and the market.

  On this trip, we aim to see as much as possible in a very short amount of time. Iraq has a lot of history to offer, so of course we want to make the most out of this trip. Because of that, the days may be long and it involves a lot of driving as we make our way from south to north. 

  Accommodation for both the marshes and the homestay will be local-style on thin mattresses either in tents or on the floor. We can provide private tents in the marshes but the homestay may not be able to accommodate for private rooms. There is an option to stay at the hotel if you prefer for an extra fee of $50 USD per night in Najaf.

  A tour to Socotra is one you are unlikely to forget any time soon. Socotra Island is unlike anywhere else on earth. The dragon blood trees with their flat-topped canopies look like something from a science fiction film. The lagoons are the kind of turquoise that makes you question whether you’re looking at a postcard or not. And the night sky, in this far corner of the Indian Ocean, is astonishing.

  Socotra Island remains largely undiscovered, and travelling to Socotra requires an adventurous spirit. Camping for a week in some very rural but incredible landscapes, few showers and some of the most freshly prepared seafood you could wish for.

  But the secret won’t stay kept for much longer… 

  Socotra Island sits in the Arabian Sea east of the Horn of Africa, south of the Arabian Peninsula. It belongs to Yemen, but geographically, biologically, and politically isolated for so long that it has evolved a unique ecosystem and has been spared from war and conflict, meaning it is completely safe to visit.

  Over a third of its plant species exist nowhere else on earth, a level comparable only to the Galapagos Islands. The most famous of these is Dracaena cinnabari, the dragon blood tree, whose inverted-umbrella silhouette has made it one of the most recognisable plants in the world. UNESCO recognised the island as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2008.

  This week-long tour to Socotra covers a full circuit of the island. We will travel Socotra in the best way possible – by 4WD over scenic coastal roads and rugged mountain passes, camping on beaches and in protected areas throughout.

  The route for this Socotra tour takes in the western lagoon at Detwah, the dragon blood tree forests of Dixam Plateau and Homhil, the sand dunes and beaches of the southern coast, the freshwater pools of Kalisan Canyon, the stalactite cave of Hoq, and the coral gardens of the Dihamri Marine Protected Area.

  We will also spend some time in Hadibo, the capital city of Socotra Island. Here, we will have a chance to walk around the city and do some shopping. 

  The pace of this Socotra tour is unhurried - but spectacular, soaking up the atmosphere of island life. We sleep camping under open sky, travelling with a team of private chefs and local guides and drivers, and you can expect an experience of complete immersion in a landscape that feels entirely separate from the rest of the world.

     Ayhaft National Park

     • Ayhaft National Park | Drive through otherworldly landscapes to Ayhaft National Park, a biodiversity hotspot where dragon's blood trees stand like ancient sentinels. Trek through wadis filled with endemic plants, then cool off in natural freshwater pools.
        
     • Delisha Beach | As the sun dips low, continue to Delisha Beach, where powdery white sands meet turquoise waters.
        
     • Camp Set Up & Dinner | We will set up our beachfront camp, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and rest under the stars.

     Dihamri Marine Protected Area

     • Dihamri Marine Protected Area | Head to the finest snorkelling site on Socotra and one of the best in the Arabian Sea, featuring hard and soft coral gardens in excellent condition. Look out for parrotfish, clownfish, moray eels, octopus, and sea turtles. Bring snorkelling equipment or rent locally.
        
     • Local Fishing Village | Visit a nearby fishing village to learn about ancient Socotri maritime traditions and connect with locals.
        
     • Camp Set Up & Beachside Dinner | Set up camp right on the protected beach and fall asleep to the lullaby of gentle waves. A good relaxing night is needed for the big trek to the cave the following day.

     • Hoq Cave | Embark on a 45-minute hike to reach a vast stalactite cave on the northeastern coast. See ancient inscriptions in Palmyrene, South Arabian, Brahmi, and Indian scripts left by traders and pilgrims of the ancient incense routes. One of the most atmospheric sites on the island.
        
     • Ersal Beach | Visit a secluded cove of crystal-clear water surrounded by towering granite cliffs.
        
     • Arher Beach & Dunes | Explore a unique beach where freshwater springs emerge from towering sand dunes and run across the sand straight into the sea.
        
     • Dune Climb | Climb the famous giant dunes of Arher Beach for sunset and incredible views across the island – if you dare!
        
     • Beachside Bonfire & Dinner | Wind down with a beachside bonfire and dinner under the stars before resting at the campsite.

     • Boat Trip | Watch for dolphins playing in the wake. Explore sea caves and snorkel in pristine waters before returning for your final night camping on the island.
        
     • Lagoon Swimming | Return to Detwah to enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon.

  We travel south to the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf, where millions of pilgrims gather each year, and walk through the ruins of Babylon, Ur, and Uruk. The very places where writing and cities were born!

  In the far south, we glide through the Marshes of Mesopotamia, meeting families who still live in reed houses on the water, before reaching Basra, Iraq’s gateway to the Gulf.

  Lebanon & Syria

  We then go to Lebanon, where you will have a couple of days to explore and prepare to cross into Syria.

  From Beirut, we drive to Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth.

  We’ll wander along Straight Street, visit the Umayyad Mosque and Ananias Church, and share tea with locals at Al Nofara Café, where the city’s legendary storyteller still performs.

  We continue south to Bosra, home to the world’s best-preserved Roman theatre, then north through mountain landscapes to Mar Musa Monastery, Homs, and Aleppo.

  In Aleppo, we explore the grand citadel, restored souks, and the traditional soap factories the city is famous for.

  We’ll visit the mighty Krak des Chevaliers, sample local wines in the Homs countryside, and spend a night in the picturesque Christian village of Al Mishtaya.

  Our journey ends in Palmyra, once a jewel of the Silk Road and the seat of Queen Zenobia’s empire.

     Into Syria

     Beirut to Damascus Scenic Drive

     • We will leave early from the Lebanese capital on a scenic drive to the Syrian border, and onward to Damascus. This is a ca. 4-hour-long drive, including formalities at the Lebanon-Syria border.
        
     • Check in and a short recharge at our hotel in Damascus.

     The Historic Old Town of Damascus

     • Ananias Church | The oldest underground structure of Damascus and the presumed remains of Ananias of Damascus' home, where Saul was baptised, who is known today as Paul the Apostle.
        
     • Straight Street | Also known by its Latin name, Via Recta, is the Roman street that runs from East to West in Damascus' Old Town. The street has several sites dating back to the Roman, Christian, and Islamic periods, and according to the Book of Acts, St. Paul also visited here.
        
     • Al Nofara | The oldest café in Damascus, where we will listen to the famous storyteller.
        
     • Dinner will be at Naerj, the best restaurant in Damascus Old Town, where you are guaranteed to have one of the best meals of your life.

     Damascus - Bosra - Damascus

     • National Museum | Here, we will gain an overview of the civilisations that have thrived on Syrian soil. It exhibits statues, seals, jewellery, masks, mosaics, tablets, and weavings from the most important sites in the country.
        
     • Souk Al-Hamidiye | The most beautiful souk of Damascus. Its shops display a wide range of goods, including clothes, fabrics, pastries, and handicrafts.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | A historic site of worship, dating back to the first millennium BCE, it was once a church and is now one of the most important mosques in the World.

     Drive to Bosra

     • In the afternoon, we head south through the lush, fertile plains to the ancient city of Bosra al-Sham (also Busra / Busra al-sham).
        
     • Bosra is certainly home to the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world.
        
     • We'll explore the city’s rich Roman heritage, including its baths and captivating historical tales. 
        
     • Drive back to Damascus.

     Damascus to Aleppo

     Mar Musa

     • Our second stop along the road will be Deir Mar Musa, a breathtaking 6^th century monastery perched among rugged mountains.
        
     • Shaped like a towering fortress, this ancient site was founded by Mar Musa al-Habashi (Saint Moses of Abyssinia), who, according to legend, was the son of an Ethiopian king.

     Homs

     • Following this, we’ll head to Homs, the most affected city by the war. During our visit, we'll explore the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Shrine and the St. Mary Church of the Holy Belt, two significant landmarks of the city.
        
     • Lunch in Homs City.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo has been a flourishing metropolis since the 3^rd millennium BCE. The city has been fighting with Damascus for the title of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city.
        
     • After some exploring of the city, we'll enjoy dinner at Qurtuba, a renowned Syrian restaurant run by an Armenian family, known for its authentic flavours and warm atmosphere.

     • Aleppo Castle | Located in the middle of the city, the castle dominates Aleppo from a height of fifty meters. Its admirably designed towers, along with its iron gates, are distinguished by their entrances made with perfection to prevent any enemy intrusion.
        
     • Aleppo Market | Stretching from the front of the castle to the old city, we'll witness the contrast between the destroyed areas, the active restoration sites, and the fully renovated section, which now looks stunning.
        
     • Abu Hagoub Restaurant | As Aleppo is renowned for its spicy sausage, we will have lunch at this famous restaurant to sample the best sausage sandwiches in the city.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | The largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city, which is currently in the final stages of restoration.
        
     • Al-Jubaili Soap Factory | The oldest soap factory in Aleppo, where you'll have the opportunity to witness the traditional process of crafting the world-famous laurel Aleppo soap, renowned for its quality and history. We will also visit a soap exhibition where you can touch the largest bar of soap in the world, according to the Guinness World Records Book.

     • Idlib Governorate | Here, we can observe a unique economic system distinct from other regions, and we will also visit the refugee camps, gaining insight into the challenges faced by displaced families.

     Hama

     • Drive south to Hama. Here, we'll visit the iconic waterwheels that once played a crucial role in providing water to the surrounding land. 

     Krak des Chevaliers

     • Krak des Chevaliers | After that, we'll continue our journey to Krak des Chevaliers, which is described by Lawrence of Arabia as "the most wholly admirable castle in the world."
        
     • In addition, this medieval crusader fortress is one of the most significant and well-preserved castles from that era, offering a fascinating glimpse into Syrian History.

     Jarjour winery

     • Jarjour Winery | We'll drive through the picturesque rural villages of the Homs Valley, heading to the renowned Jarjour winery, which is famous for its unique blue wine.
        
     • Here, we'll enjoy a wine and cheese tasting, immersing ourselves in the flavours of the region.

     Almishtaya

     • Afterwards, we take a short drive to the Christian village of Almishtaya, known for its vibrant nightlife. Indeed, you can experience the lively atmosphere and enjoy the evening in one of Syria's most charming villages.

     Al Mishtaya - Palmyra - Damascus

     • Syria's most iconic tourist destination. Notably, once a key city on the Silk Road, Palmyra briefly ruled its own empire in the 3rd century, stretching from Turkey to Egypt.
        
     • However, despite being well-preserved, much of the city was sadly destroyed during the ISIS occupation in 2015.
        
     • During our tour, we will explore what remains, including the Arch of Triumph, Fakhr ad-Din al-Maani Castle, the Sulphur Spring, the Great Columns, the Theatre, the Agora, and the Tombs.
        
     • We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in a traditional Bedouin tent restaurant, run by a local family. This is, indeed, a perfect opportunity to savour authentic Syrian cuisine while experiencing the warm hospitality of the region.

     Return to Damascus

      • Travel to the Iraqi Marshes for a late lunch of masquf, traditional Sumerian grilled fish. A vegetarian option is also available.
         
      • Marshes | Visit the UNESCO-listed wetlands where life has changed little over millennia. The Marsh Arabs still live in traditional reed houses and travel by narrow boats along the waterways.
         
      • Boat Trip in the Marshes | Take a sunset boat trip and visit a traditional reed house where we will spend the night.

     Into Syria

     Beirut to Damascus Scenic Drive

     • We will leave early from the Lebanese capital on a scenic drive to the Syrian border, and onward to Damascus. This is a ca. 4-hour-long drive, including formalities at the Lebanon-Syria border.
        
     • Check in and a short recharge at our hotel in Damascus.

     The Historic Old Town of Damascus

     • Ananias Church | The oldest underground structure of Damascus and the presumed remains of Ananias of Damascus' home, where Saul was baptised, who is known today as Paul the Apostle.
        
     • Straight Street | Also known by its Latin name, Via Recta, is the Roman street that runs from East to West in Damascus' Old Town. The street has several sites dating back to the Roman, Christian, and Islamic periods, and according to the Book of Acts, St. Paul also visited here.
        
     • Al Nofara | The oldest café in Damascus, where we will listen to the famous storyteller.

     Damascus - Bosra - Damascus

     • National Museum | Here, we will gain an overview of the civilisations that have thrived on Syrian soil. It exhibits statues, seals, jewellery, masks, mosaics, tablets, and weavings from the most important sites in the country.
        
     • Souk Al-Hamidiye | The most beautiful souk of Damascus. Its shops display a wide range of goods, including clothes, fabrics, pastries, and handicrafts.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | A historic site of worship, dating back to the first millennium BCE, it was once a church and is now one of the most important mosques in the World.

     Drive to Bosra

     • In the afternoon, we head south through the lush, fertile plains to the ancient city of Bosra al-Sham (also Busra / Busra al-sham).
        
     • Bosra is certainly home to the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world.
        
     • We'll explore the city’s rich Roman heritage, including its baths and captivating historical tales. 
        
     • Drive back to Damascus.

     Damascus to Aleppo

     Mar Musa

     • Our second stop along the road will be Deir Mar Musa, a breathtaking 6^th century monastery perched among rugged mountains.
        
     • Shaped like a towering fortress, this ancient site was founded by Mar Musa al-Habashi (Saint Moses of Abyssinia), who, according to legend, was the son of an Ethiopian king.

     Homs

     • Following this, we’ll head to Homs, the most affected city by the war. During our visit, we'll explore the Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Shrine and the St. Mary Church of the Holy Belt, two significant landmarks of the city.
        
     • Lunch in Homs City.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo has been a flourishing metropolis since the 3^rd millennium BCE. The city has been fighting with Damascus for the title of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city.
        
     • After some exploring of the city, we'll enjoy dinner at Qurtuba, a renowned Syrian restaurant run by an Armenian family, known for its authentic flavours and warm atmosphere.

     Aleppo

     • Aleppo Castle | Located in the middle of the city, the castle dominates Aleppo from a height of fifty meters. Its admirably designed towers, along with its iron gates, are distinguished by their entrances made with perfection to prevent any enemy intrusion.
        
     • Aleppo Market | Stretching from the front of the castle to the old city, we'll witness the contrast between the destroyed areas, the active restoration sites, and the fully renovated section, which now looks stunning.
        
     • Abu Hagoub Restaurant | As Aleppo is renowned for its spicy sausage, we will have lunch at this famous restaurant to sample the best sausage sandwiches in the city.
        
     • Umayyad Mosque | The largest and one of the oldest mosques in the city, which is currently in the final stages of restoration.
        
     • Al-Jubaili Soap Factory | The oldest soap factory in Aleppo, where you'll have the opportunity to witness the traditional process of crafting the world-famous laurel Aleppo soap, renowned for its quality and history. We will also visit a soap exhibition where you can touch the largest bar of soap in the world, according to the Guinness World Records Book.
        
     • For sunset, we will visit one of our secret spots overlooking Aleppo.
        
     • Uncle Hamido's Restaurant | For dinner, we will get the chance to taste what is often hailed as the best falafel in the World.

     • Idlib Governorate | Here, we can observe a unique economic system distinct from other regions, and we will also visit the refugee camps, gaining insight into the challenges faced by displaced families.

     Hama

     • Drive south to Hama. Here, we'll visit the iconic waterwheels that once played a crucial role in providing water to the surrounding land. 

     Krak des Chevaliers

     • Krak des Chevaliers | After that, we'll continue our journey to Krak des Chevaliers, which is described by Lawrence of Arabia as "the most wholly admirable castle in the world."
        
     • In addition, this medieval crusader fortress is one of the most significant and well-preserved castles from that era, offering a fascinating glimpse into Syrian History.

     Jarjour winery

     • Jarjour Winery | We'll drive through the picturesque rural villages of the Homs Valley, heading to the renowned Jarjour winery, which is famous for its unique blue wine.
        
     • Here, we'll enjoy a wine and cheese tasting, immersing ourselves in the flavours of the region.

     Almishtaya

     • Afterwards, we take a short drive to the Christian village of Almishtaya, known for its vibrant nightlife. Indeed, you can experience the lively atmosphere and enjoy the evening in one of Syria's most charming villages.

     Al Mishtaya - Palmyra - Damascus

     • Syria's most iconic tourist destination. Notably, once a key city on the Silk Road, Palmyra briefly ruled its own empire in the 3rd century, stretching from Turkey to Egypt.
        
     • However, despite being well-preserved, much of the city was sadly destroyed during the ISIS occupation in 2015.
        
     • During our tour, we will explore what remains, including the Arch of Triumph, Fakhr ad-Din al-Maani Castle, the Sulphur Spring, the Great Columns, the Theatre, the Agora, and the Tombs.
        
     • We’ll enjoy a delicious lunch in a traditional Bedouin tent restaurant, run by a local family. This is, indeed, a perfect opportunity to savour authentic Syrian cuisine while experiencing the warm hospitality of the region.

  Yemen is one of the most astonishing places in the world. Yet, years of conflict mean almost no one has been.

  Southern Yemen, especially the Hadhramaut area, has remained largely stable and shielded from conflict for many years, making it a secure and safe place to start your Yemen tour adventure. 

  Yemen’s history stretches back to the ancient kingdoms of Sheba and Hadramaut, civilisations that controlled the incense trade routes linking the Arabian Peninsula to Rome and India. The landscape they left behind, cities of towering mud-brick, walled oases, cliff-top fortresses and desert shrines, remains largely intact. Partly because Yemen has been so effectively sealed from mass tourism. And partly because its people have maintained their architectural traditions across the centuries.

  Our 7-day Yemen tour concentrates on the Hadhramaut Valley and Wadi Doan areas. The heartland of southern Yemen’s extraordinary mud-brick civilisation.

  Beginning in Seiyun, the capital of the Hadhramaut region, the route takes in Shibam, the legendary ‘Manhattan of the Desert’ and UNESCO World Heritage Site of 500 mud-brick towers built to a height of up to 40 metres. You will explore the sacred desert pilgrimage site of Qabr Hud and the religious city of Tarim with its world-record mud-brick minaret.

  We will also travel by road through the layered canyon landscape of Wadi Doan, where ancient villages perch on ridgelines and boulder tops above a valley floor of date palms.

  We finish the tour at Mukalla, a port city of white buildings and seafood markets on the Arabian Sea Coast and a very different landscape again. 

  Throughout the tour in Yemen, the experience has been designed to be as immersive as possible. We will enjoy a traditional Yemeni lunch on the floor of a local restaurant, taste some famous Yemeni coffee in a local home, take part in a honey tasting with a Wadi Doan beekeeper, and experience an evening of live Yemeni music and dance at the cliff-top resort of Haid Al-Jazil. To make it extra immersive, you will receive your own complimentary local Yemeni outfit upon arrival.

  Police escorts accompany our group on the ground. This tour is operated in close partnership with our local partners based in Seiyun, who have operated tours in the Hadhramaut region for many years and have intimate knowledge of the sites, the communities and the logistics of travelling safely in southern Yemen.

     Seiyun, Qabr Hud & Tarim

     Sacred sites and timeless villages

     • Qabr Hud | One of the most significant Muslim pilgrimage sites in the Arabian Peninsula, the tomb of the Prophet Hud sits in the desert 140km northeast of Seiyun. The site comprises a domed tomb high on the hillside, a prayer hall built around the great rock believed to be Hud’s camel turned to stone, and a pilgrimage town of whitewashed mud-brick houses entirely deserted for all but three days a year.
        
     • Traditional Lunch | Enjoy a traditional Yemeni lunch on the floor of a local restaurant.

     Tarim

     • Al-Muhdar Mosque | The tallest mud-brick minaret in the world, at 40 metres, rising above one of the great centres of Islamic learning in the Arab world.
        
     • Al-Ahqaf University & Library | One of the leading Islamic educational institutions in Yemen, with a major collection of Islamic manuscripts.
        
     • Historical Cemeteries | The cemeteries of Tarim, particularly Zanbal, contain the tombs of hundreds of Islamic scholars spanning more than a thousand years. The white domes rising from the desert floor are an unforgettable sight.
        
     • Einat Village | A small Sufi pilgrimage village near Tarim containing the tomb of Sheikh Abu Bakr bin Salem Al-Alawi, surrounded by the domed graves of imams and scholars.

     • Al-Ranad Palace | A pre-Islamic palace site representing the oldest layers of Tarim’s long history.

     Seiyun

     • Kithiri Palace Museum | The great white palace of the Al-Kathiri sultans, one of the largest mud-brick buildings in the world, now an archaeological museum.
        
     • Lunch | Lunch at a local restaurant followed by an optional visit to the Qat market.
        
     • Al-Handal Souk | Browse Seiyun’s lively market, where spices, sweets, nuts and local crafts fill the stalls.

     Shibam City Tour

     • In the afternoon we’ll get the chance to explore the incredible Shibam city.
        
     • Shibam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest examples of high-rise urban planning on earth. 500 towers of mud-brick, 8 to 10 storeys and up to 40 metres tall, built from the 16^th century and maintained by the families who have inhabited them ever since.
        
     • Known internationally as the Manhattan of the Desert, we’ll explore the alleys, the museum, and watch the sunset over the skyline.

     Mountain villages and canyon views

     Wadi Doan

     • Drive into Wadi Doan, one of the most dramatic canyon landscapes in the Arabian Peninsula.
        
     • Experience sheer walls of rock above a floor of date palms and an extraordinary succession of ancient villages perched at every level of the gorge.
        
     • Al-Hajjrain | A medieval village perched dramatically on a mountain ridge above the wadi floor.
        
     • Seef Village & Fort Al-Amoudi | The administrative centre of the wadi, known for its distinctive painted architecture.
        
     • Haid Al-Jazil Resort | An almost impossibly situated village and resort built on a massive boulder 150 metres above the wadi floor, with a panoramic view across the canyon that makes this one of the most memorable overnight stops in Yemen. We spend two nights here to soak up the atmosphere and the infinity pool.

     Wadi Doan Hidden Gems

     Hiking, honey and the hidden villages of the valley

     • Hike | A one-hour trail down from Haid Al-Jazil to Hawfah village below. Enjoy coffee with local families.
        
     • Buqshan Palace | The most colourful building in Wadi Doan, a mud-brick palace of 1798 covered in vivid painted windows of turquoise, yellow and green with stained glass, reflecting the architectural influences of the Hadhramaut diaspora in Southeast Asia.
        
     • Husn Fort, Qarn Majed | A 19^th-century mud-brick fort positioned at the point where the wadi splits into its two branches.
        
     • Budha Village | A hilltop village with a panoramic view across the canyon. A landscape that looks, as the itinerary puts it, like a fantasy film.
        
     • Al-Khuraiba | A village with a small traditional market that once served as a vital trading hub for the wadi communities.
        
     • Honey Tasting | Honey tasting with a local beekeeper. Hadhramaut Sidr honey is considered among the finest in the world, prized across the Arab world for its medicinal qualities.
        
     • Ar-Ribat | The ancestral home of Muhammad bin Laden, whose house still stands in the village. The family emigrated to Saudi Arabia, where Muhammad bin Laden built one of the largest construction companies in the Arab world.
        
     • Traditional Live Music & Dance | For groups of 8 or more, an evening of traditional Yemeni music and dance at Haid Al-Jazil Resort.

     Wadi Doan to Al-Mukalla – The Arabian Sea coast

     • Coastal Drive & Viewpoint | A three-hour drive to Al-Mukalla on the Arabian Sea coast. En route, stop at a roadside viewpoint over the mountain road for fresh coconut juice and a chance to photograph a camel-powered sesame press – the oil pressed here is used both in local cooking and as a traditional hair and skin cream.

     Al-Mukalla

     • Al-Mukalla is a port city of striking white buildings and elaborate minarets on the Arabian Sea, developed from a small seaport in the 11th century into a major coastal trading city. The Quaiti Palace (now a museum), Fort Gweizi, the old city, and the interconnected souqs of the waterfront make it a vivid end to the mainland programme.
        
     • Lunch at a seafood restaurant.
        
     • Afternoon at Leisure | Afternoon and evening at leisure to relax or explore independently.

     • The Quaiti Palace | Built in 1925 in the Eastern Indian and British colonial styles, this former residence of the Sultan of the Qu'aiti Sultanate until 1967 is now a museum showcasing the region's royal history.
        
     • Lunch in Al-Mukalla.
        
     • Drive back to Seiyun (4 to 5 hours).
        
     • Farewell dinner in Seiyun & NYE celebrations.

  Flights to Yemen

  International flights to and from Yemen are not included. The tour begins on arrival at Seiyun International Airport (GXF). We have designed this itinerary around return flights from Cairo, Egypt. It is not advised to book flights until the official schedule has been published. 

  Transiting in Egypt

  If your flights to and from Cairo are with Egypt Air and are within 48 hours, you will be eligible for a free transit visa and hotel. Make sure to visit the transit area as you arrive at the airport (before immigration & paying for your visa). 

  Yemen Visas

  Yemen tourist visa and security clearance are included in the tour price and arranged on your behalf by Yemen Horizon. Processing is handled on arrival at Seiyun Airport.

  Safety in Yemen

  The tour operates with a police escort throughout all ground transportation. Our local partners maintain active relationships with local authorities and are in constant contact with security services. The tour operates exclusively in the southern Hadhramaut region, which has maintained relative stability. All safety decisions are made in real time by the local team.

  Yemeni Cultural attire

  Yemen is a conservative country. A complimentary traditional Yemeni outfit is provided for all participants: an abaya and headscarf for women, a traditional thobe for men. Guides will advise when cultural attire is expected. The approach is flexible and respectful rather than prescriptive.

  Local data SIM cards are provided in all vehicles throughout the tour.

• Overall

  Iraq is one of those places where history feels alive. From the Abbasid legacy of Baghdad to the pilgrimage of Najaf and Karbala. This is a short tour packed with depth, taking you to the highlights of federal Iraq whilst also offering the opportunity to spend a night in the Iraqi Marshes. 

  This itinerary focuses on central and southern Iraq, combining culture, religion, and history - both ancient and modern. 

  We begin and end in Baghdad, with time to explore the city's museums, markets and historic quarters.

  Between Baghdad stays, we visit Karbala and Najaf - two of the most significant cities in the Shia Muslim world - before travelling south to spend a night in a traditional reed house in the Iraqi Marshes. 

  Between the modern cities, we will visit remote ancient cities - such as the Ziggurat Of Ur dating back to 5000 BCE, Uruk - the birthplace of the first written language, and Ctesiphon - the world's oldest free-standing arch. 

  We end the trip with a night back in Baghdad on the last day of 2027 to celebrate the New Year and welcome in 2028. You can expect a night of music and fireworks! 

  Expect full days and some long drives, but the payoff is seeing a huge cross-section of Iraq in a short time!

     • Iraqi National Museum | Visit the Iraqi National Museum to get introduced to Iraqi culture and history throughout the years. This museum houses a vast collection of artefacts from Mesopotamian civilisations, including Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian relics. It is considered one of the most important museums in the Middle East.
        
     • Mutanabi Street and Old Baghdad | Explore the old part of Baghdad. Visit Mutanabi Street, known as the Book Street, along with the antique market and the old copper market. It is named after the 10th-century poet Al-Mutanabi.
        
     • Tea and Coffee Stop in Old Baghdad | Stop at one of Baghdad’s most famous tea and coffee shops for lemon tea or shisha!
        
     • Mustansiriya School | Visit Mustansiriya School, one of the oldest remaining schools in the world. The Mustansiriya Madrasa was established in the 13th century and served as an important educational institution during the Abbasid era.
        
     • Baghdad Green Zone | Drive through Baghdad’s Green Zone.
        
     • Save the Iraqi Culture Monument | Visit a monument dedicated to Iraqi culture and history.
        
     • Martyrs Monument | Visit the Martyrs Monument at sunset. The large blue-domed structure was built in the 1980s to commemorate Iraqis who died in past wars and stands as a symbol of national remembrance.

     • Ancient City of Babylon | Babylon was one of the most important cities of ancient Mesopotamia and is known for being the capital of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar II. It is associated with major cultural achievements, including the Code of Hammurabi and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
        
     • Saddam’s Palace | Visit Saddam Hussein's palace, a remnant from his regime, and enjoy views overlooking the ancient city

     Karbala

     • Karbala is a holy city for Shia Muslims and the site of the shrine of Imam Hussein. It is the focal point of the Arbaeen pilgrimage, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.
        
     • Imam Hussein’s Shrine | Visit Imam Hussein’s Shrine, which marks the burial place of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, martyred at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Here you will learn why it is one of the most important cities in Iraq religiously, with the largest annual gathering in the world.

     Karbala to Najaf

     Drive to Najaf

     • Ezekiel Tomb | Visit the Ezekiel Tomb, believed to be the burial place of the biblical prophet Ezekiel. The site contains Hebrew inscriptions and was historically shared by Jewish and Muslim communities.
        
     • Daniel’s Market | Explore the old market next to the tomb.
        
     • Ziggurat of Borsippa | Visit the Ziggurat of Borsippa, which is believed by many to be the Tower of Babel.

     Najaf City Tour

     • Old City | Explore Najaf and its Old City, one of the most important cities in the Shia Muslim world.
        
     • Wadi al Salam | Visit Wadi al Salam, meaning "Valley of Peace", the largest cemetery in the world. It has served as a burial site for over 1,400 years and is located in Najaf.
        
     • Market Visit | Visit the market to buy local clothes, abayas, and souvenirs. You'll need this local attire to enter the shrine.
        
     • Imam Ali Shrine | Visit the Imam Ali Shrine, the burial site of Imam Ali, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad and the first Imam in Shia Islam. The shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Shia Muslims. When we take a look inside the seperated male/female sections, you'll truly be astounded by the colours, lights, and decorations from this fantastic piece of architecture.
        
     • Kufa Mosque | Visit Kufa Mosque, the fourth holiest site for Shia Muslims, with historical and religious signficance due to being associated with Imam Ali and early Islamic history.

     Najaf to the Iraqi Marshes 

     The Iraqi Marshes & Overnight Stay 

     • City of Ur | Visit the ancient city of Ur, including the Ziggurat Of Ur and the House of the Prophet Abraham. This 4,000-year-old city was once one of the most important Sumerian settlements. According to tradition, it is considered the birthplace of Abraham.
        
     • Travel to the Iraqi Marshes for a late lunch of masquf, traditional Sumerian grilled fish. A vegetarian option is also available.
        
     • Marshes | Visit the UNESCO-listed wetlands where life has changed little over millennia. The Marsh Arabs still live in traditional reed houses and travel by narrow boats along the waterways.
        
     • Boat Trip in the Marshes | Take a sunset boat trip and visit a traditional reed house where we will spend the night.
        
     • Night in the Marshes | Enjoy an evening with snacks and a light dinner around the fire, accompanied by local music surrounded by nature.

     Accommodation | Samarian-style local accommodation in the marshes. Note: This accommodation features local-style sleeping arrangements and is not a hotel. Amenities such as toiletries are not provided, but the experience makes up for it!

  On this trip, we aim to see as much as possible in a very short amount of time. Iraq has a lot of history on offer, so of course we want to make the most out of this trip. Because of that, the days may be long and it involves a lot of driving as we make our way from south to north.
