Not Just Any Given Sunday – Over 1600 runners take part in Pyongyang's marathon weekend.
Race Day on the 2019 Pyongyang Marathon Weekend
On a morning in early April, hundreds of athletes from around the world gather in Pyongyang’s Kim Il Sung Stadium for what is not just any given Sunday in the North Korean capital. One Sunday in early April each year is Pyongyang Marathon race day – an event officially known as the Mangyondae Prize International Marathon. This year officially marks the 30th iteration of the event.
Without a cloud in the sky on this fine spring morning, approximately 1600 runners, including professionals and amateurs. Over 620 locals and just under1000 foreigners took part in the marathon’s opening ceremony, before setting off on full-marathon, half-marathon, 10 km, and 5 km events on the streets of Pyongyang.
A football match of the DPRK's premier league was held in the stadium during the race.
