Introduction

Founded in 1968 and made up of just a handful of small rooms, this modest gallery is little-visited but well worth a stop for anyone spending time in the city.

Sinuiju Art Gallery

At the Sinuiju Art Gallery, you will find a selection of paintings, posters, prints, embroideries, right down to kitsch trinkets for tourists. Most if not all of the art is by local artists but make sure to ask as any art from Mansudae Art Studio would be under UN Sanctions and should NOT be purchased.

The quality is quite good, although (in common with many galleries in the country) it is not overly well-curated, with a mish-mash of styles and themes on the walls rather than being presented in any definable order. 

However, one very positive characteristic here is that prices are much lower than art galleries in Pyongyang; sometimes even 50% less.

Also, there is often a portraitist in residence who can do a 5 min drawing of you for a very reasonable price (note, you will look a bit Korean in this drawing – if you aren’t Korean already that is!)

Visiting Tips

• A visit to the Sinuiju Art Gallery will take around 20-30 mins usually, maybe a few more minutes if you have a portrait done!
