  First, to the mountains. We begin our adventure in Bhutan, the tiny Himalayan kingdom where Gross National Happiness matters more than GDP, and ancient traditions live on among soaring peaks and valleys. In a country where there are no traffic lights (only polite hand-waving policemen) and where even the airport landing feels like an achievement, we'll soak up everything that makes Bhutan so magical.

  Think grand fortresses (dzongs) rising from misty valleys, prayer flags flapping along mountain passes, farmers working the fields in traditional dress, and cliffside monasteries perched impossibly high above the world. We'll visit sleepy villages, walk to sacred sites, and soak up the calm cool atmosphere. 

  Then, just as you’ve adjusted to Bhutan's crisp mountain air, we swap the heights for the waterways, flying down into the bustling heart of Bangladesh. A country bursting with life and energy. 

  Here, history isn’t tucked away behind glass. It’s very much alive, vivid, and part of everyday life. We'll meet master saree weavers keeping ancient crafts alive, explore lost kingdoms, visit floating markets straight out of a storybook, and cruise through the vast Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, home to crocodiles, river dolphins, and, if we're lucky, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.

  Along the way, we'll stop at ancient monasteries once bustling with monks and scholars and remote fishing villages where otters help fishermen bring in the day’s catch. A centuries-old tradition still quietly surviving.

  This isn’t just two countries. It’s two completely different worlds.

  1. December 1 | Tuesday

     Flight to Bhutan

     Arrival in the Himalayan Kingdom with an adrenaline-fueled approach to Paro Airport

     • Independent travel to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK).
        
     • 05:00 | Group meeting at the Drukair check-in counter at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
        
     • Flight departure from Suvarnabhumi Airport on Drukair flight KB131 at 07:30. A ca. 4-hour flight with an intermediate stop in Bagdogra. A full meal service is provided on the flight.
        
     • Flight arrival at Paro International Airport (PBH) at 10:40. Paro is one of the World's scariest airports. Paro Airport is situated in a valley lying at an altitude of over 2,200 meters, surrounded by the high peaks of the Himalayas. Only specially certified pilots can land here.
        
     • Transfer to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan since 1955 (ca. 1.5-hour drive).
        
     • Check-in and refreshments at the hotel, followed by lunch.

     First Impressions of Bhutan

     • Gongzur (Memorial) Chorten | A stupa erected in the memory of the 3^rd King of Bhutan, Jigmi Dorji Wangchuk (reign: 1952-1972). It was built in 1974 by the Royal Grandmother Ashi for her son. There are no mortal remains of the King here, only a photograph draped in ceremonial scarves.

  2. December 2 | Wednesday

     Thimphu

     Sightseeing in Thimphu, the largest city and capital of Bhutan (Alt.: 2,300 m)

     • Buddha Dordenma | Also known as the Buddha Point, this 51 metre high grand statue of Buddha was erected in 2015 to celebrate the 60^th birth anniversary of the 4th King, Jigme Singye Wangchuk (reign: 1972-2006).  
        
     • Royal Takin Preserve | At this wildlife preserve, which reopened in 2024, we can see the national animal of Bhutan, the takin (Dong Gyem Tse), which, according to legend, was assembled from the skull of a goat and the skeleton of a cow by prechear Drukp Kunley in the 15^th century.
        
     • National Institute of Zorig Chusum | There are two schools in Bhutan where students can master the thirteen traditional arts of Bhutan, one here in Thimphu and one in Trashiyangtse. Here we can visit classrooms where students learn the craftsmanship of, among others, wood carving, weaving, painting, and sculpting. Opposite the institute is an Art Gallery and Art Shop where you can buy Bhutanese art.
        
     • Kajaa Throm Farmers' Market | The central market of Thimpu. The ground floor sells imported products, while on the upper floor you can sample locally grown products such as different types of chillis and honey. There is also a food court here.
        
     • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory | A small factory where paper is manufactured traditionally. You can see all stages of the paper production from the preparation of the fibre to drying. Next to the factory is a small shop selling paper products.
        
     • Bhutan Postal Museum | This is more like a souvenir shop than a museum, selling stamps and books. Here you can even make your own stamp and use it to send your postcard to your loved ones.

  3. December 3 | Thursday

     Punakha

     Drive to Punakha, the previous capital of Bhutan

     • This morning we will drive to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan till 1955. During our drive, we will see the Himalayan range peaks such as the world’s highest unclimbed mountain, Gangkar Puensum (7564 metres).
        
     • Druk Wangyel Stupas | Built with the finest wood and stone work, the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo dedicated this as a tribute to the 4^th King Jigme Singye Wangchuck for his selfless sacrifices for the nation.  
        
     • Chimi Lhakhang | A 30-minute walk from the road, it is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who in the 15th century used humour, songs, and outrageous behaviour to dramatise his teachings and hence is also known as the ‘Divine Madman’ (he might be familiar by now from the myth of the takins). It is widely believed that childless couples who pray at this temple are usually blessed with children.

     Punkaha (Alt.: 1,310 m)

     • Punakha Dzong | A tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955. Its significance to the Bhutanese nation is emphasised by the fact that it not only remains the winter residence of the national clergy and the Chief Abbot of Buddhist Bhutan, but in 2010, the 5th King’s royal wedding ceremony took place here.
        
     • Homestay in Punakha | A highlight of the trip. We will spend a night at the homestay of a Bhutanese family, where we will be part of the life of our hosts, cooking and eating together with the family, and also share a few cups (at least three to follow the traditions!) ara, the national liquor of Bhutan.

  4. December 4 | Friday

     Paro

     Drive to Paro

     • Drive from Punakha to Paro (3-4 hours).

     Paro (Alt.: 2,250 m)

     • National Museum of Bhutan | Once the watch tower for the defence of Rinpung Dzong during the inter-valley wars of the 17th century, it was reestablished as the National Museum in 1967. It holds a fascinating collection of arts, relics, religious thangka paintings, handicrafts, masks, costumes, armour and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps. The visit will provide an insight into the rich and unique cultural heritage and tradition of Bhutan.
        
     • Rinpung Dzong | The “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels” was built in 1646 for defence against frequent incursions. Historically, it was an important administrative centre and the seat of many feudal lords and Penlop (governor). Today, it is the legislative, executive, judicial and religious centre for the people of Paro. It was also a filming location for Bernardo Bertolucci's 1993 movie, Little Buddha.

  5. December 5 | Saturday

     Haa Valley

     Drive to Haa Velley

     • Our drive to the Haa Valley will take around 3 hours and is the most picturesque drive during our tour on narrow, serpentine mountain roads.
        
     • Chelela Pass | At 3,988 metres, it is the highest motorable point in Bhutan between Paro and Haa Valley. As we reach the highest point of the pass, shout "lyha gyelo" (may good win over evil) along with your Bhutanese guide and driver, a custom to do in Bhutan when reaching a mountain pass.
        
     • Hoisting Prayer Flags | We will hoist prayer flags along the mountain site during our journey to Haa. Prayer flags carry their own significance and blessings. Not only will the person who mounts the flag receive good karma, but all the sentient beings will benefit from the blessings carried by the wind. The reason why prayer flags are hung high above is so that the fluttering will emit positive spiritual vibrations.

     Haa Valley (Alt.: 2,670 m)

     • Haa Valley | One of the least visited parts of Bhutan, opened to foreign tourists only in 2002. It is one of the smallest and least populated districts in Bhutan, renowned for its natural beauty and traditional lifestyle.
        
     • Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo | The White and Black Temples are twin temples built in the 7^th century during the same time as the more often visited temple of Kichu Lhakhang (which we will visit the next day). According to the legend, to determine the location of the temples, the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo released two doves, a white and a black one, and where each of the doves landed, a temple was built; hence the name White and Black Temples.
        
     • Bhutanese Archery | Archery is the national sport of Bhutan, played on both traditional equipment made out of a special bamboo and imported modern fibre equipment. We will try the traditional bows and arrows.
        
     • Cultural show program of mask and folk dances.
        
     • Return to Paro (2-3 hours drive).
        
     • Dinner at hotel.

  6. December 6 | Sunday

     Hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest)

     Tiger's Nest

     • Taktsang Monastery | Commonly known as the Tiger's Nest, Bhutan's most revered temple is perched on a cliff 900 meters above Paro Valley. According to the legend, Guru Padmasambhava is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress from Singye Dzong in Lhuentse, to meditate in a cave where Taktsang now stands, hence the name ‘Tiger’s Nest’.
        
     • Note: the hike takes about 3 hours up and 2 hours down and requires good stamina. The first part of the hike up to Taktsang Cafeteria is moderately strenuous and can also be done on horseback, while the last bit just before reaching the monastery includes about 700 steps down and 250 steps up (and the reverse on the way back) that can be challenging for those not used to doing some regular exercise or have knee problems.

     Paro River Valley

     • Kichu Lhakhang | One of the oldest temples in Bhutan, which was built in the 7^th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 temples the Emperor built in Bhutan, and the main reason for the construction of the temple was to pin down ‘the left foot of the Ogress’, which was going against the establishment of Buddhism in the Himalayas.
        
     • Bhutanese Farm House | After the successful hike to Tiger's Nest, you can enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath here to regenerate your muscles and joints.
        
     • Dinner at hotel.

  7. December 8 | Monday

     From Bhutan to Bangladesh

     Paro to Dhaka on Drukair

     • We will say a teary goodbye to our Bhutanese hosts and fellow group members in Paro and board the Drukair flight KB300 to Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) at 11:30.
        
     • Scheduled arrival in Dhaka at 12:40. Meet our Bangladeshi hosts and new fellow group members.

     Free afternoon in Dhaka

     • There will be a chance to explore some sites in Dhaka and get your first taste of some great Bangladeshi food.
        
     • There will be a group dinner at the hotel and a briefing with those who join our group in Dhaka for the Bangladesh leg of our trip.

  8. December 8 | Tuesday

     Otter Fishing, Travel to Mongla | Sundarbans

     • After breakfast, we will start our long drive through the Bangladeshi countryside.

     Norail District Remote Village, Otter Fishing

     • Norail District | After early lunch, we will travel to a remote village in Norail District, where we will explore the lives of fishermen who use otters as their helpers in fishing.
        
     • A unique experience of collaboration between wild animals and humans. This is a century-old culture, now practised by just one/two families.
       
       Note: There is no animal cruelty involved. Rather, the otters are like pets working together with their owners and helping each other to survive.
        
     • Drive to Mongla, where we will board our Sundarbans tourist vessel.

     Travel to the Sundarbans

     • Lunch on Boat | We will start our tour with lunch on the vessel as it gently starts to move forward towards the Sundarbans.
        
     • Harbaria | After 3 hours of cruising, we will get down in Harbaria. Our first meetup with Sundarbans Forest! 

     Kochikhali (Sundarbans)

     • Start of Jungle Safari | We will reach Kochikhali in the evening, where we will have time to explore the forest for some time.
        
     • Mangrove Forest | In Kochikhali, we’ll observe the natural beauty of the Mangrove forest. When the sun starts to set, we will find wild animals walking silently near river beds and coming to shore for drinking water.
        
     • We'll spend the night here on the boat at Kochikhali.

  9. December 9 | Wednesday

     Exploring the Wildlife of the Sundarbans

     • Sunrise Wildlife Spotting | Very early in the morning when the sun rises, we will get into a small country boat and explore the silent beauty of Sundarban in expectation of encountering wildlife.
        
     • They come very close to river banks to drink fresh water. We hope to meet with deer, thousands of birds, wild pigs and many other wild animals.
        
     • Royal Bengal Tiger | If we are lucky enough, we might even come across the famed Royal Bengal Tiger. 

     Kotka Area

     • Jamtora Beach | The day will pass doing jungle trekking around the Jamtora Beach area, visiting the watch tower, and feeding deer at the Kotka area.
        
     • We stay the night on the boat at Kokta, and depending on the tide, we will move upstream.

  10. December 10 | Thursday

      Return from the Sundarbans

      We will cruise back to the locality depending on tide times.

      Danga Maari Canal, River Dolphins

      • On the way back, we may stop at Danga Maari Canal.
         
      • River Dolphins | This is a place where we'll hopefully find river dolphins. If we are lucky enough, we may find one or two popping up for fresh air.

      Mosque City of Bagerhat

      • After disembarking from our floating home for 2 nights, we will drive to the Mosque City of Bagerhat, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

      • Sixty Dome Mosque | We will explore this massive 15th-century UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest Sultanate-era monument in Bangladesh. Despite its name, there are 77 domes over the main hall and exactly 60 stone pillars. Many claim that this is "one of the most impressive Muslim monuments in the whole of South Asia."

      • Afterwards, we will drive to Barishal for an overnight stay.

  11. December 11 | Friday

      Remote Rural Bangladesh

      This day starts before dawn.

      • Kuriana | Our first stop is “Kuriana”, a one-hour drive away. 
         
      • Canal Cruise | Reaching there, we will be embarking on a country motorboat with a boatman for a Backwater Tour (Canal Cruise) on the canals among remote rural villages.
         
      • Floating Vegetable Market | Within a short time, we will reach a point named “Baukathi”, where we will be explore the “Floating Vegetable Market”.
         
      • On this floating market, we'll see many traditional, handheld wooden boats with local village farmers selling their fresh-grown vegetables to the city vegetable vendors.
         
      • After this, it's back to the water canal cruising again.
         
      • Timber Market | Here, we witness the journey of massive logs of mahogany, rain tree, and chambal being traded directly on the water on iconic floating rafts, and their journey to the riverside sawmills. This centennial tradition has sustained the local community since 1918.
         
      • Brick Factory | The seasonal industry of transforming river silt into millions of crimson blocks creates a striking industrial landscape of towering chimneys of Bangladeshi brick kilns. You will be introduced to every step of brickmaking, a skill of 2,500 years, and the technology used today dates back 150 years.
         
      • Rural Bangladesh | Cruise among narrow canals and watch the panoramic views of a real rural Bangladesh.

      Note: Today, we experience the raw travel style of Bangladesh as we head into the rural countryside. We will have 4 hrs in an engine boat, and only basic restrooms will be available. 

      Afternoon at your own leisure, river cruise to Dhakka

      • You will have free time in the afternoon in Barishal, where you can either rest in the hotel or explore this major city on the banks of the Kirtankhola River.
         
      • River Cruise to Dhaka | In the evening, we will ride on a river cruise to have a relaxed overnight journey to Dhaka in 1^st class cabins.

      Note: We will be taking the public ferry from Barishal to Dhaka as it is an authentic and integral part of local life, offering a simple, non-A/C experience.

  12. December 12 | Saturday

      Architecture & Drive to Bogra

      We will arrive in Dhaka in the morining by boat. After breakfast, we will drive to Bogra. On the way, we have a few stops! 

      • Tangail Saree Weaving | On the way, we will explore tangail jamdani Saree weaving in the district of Tangail. A very unique activity! The traditional art of weaving jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
         
      • Local Lunch | We will also enjoy a traditional lunch in the community here. 
         
      • Navaratna Temple | On the way to Bogra, we stop at Navaratna Temple of the 17^th century.

      Mahasthangar

      • Afterwards, the trip takes us to Mahasthangar. This is the earliest urban archaeological site so far discovered in Bangladesh.
         
      • Though it seems like it is flat, it is actually 100+ feet above sea level, where the first civilised establishment started in the region back in the 4^th century BCE. The capital, Dhaka, is only 20 feet above sea level. 
         
      • The full area was discovered by digging, and some work is still going on. The area was discovered in the early 18^th century, and the excavation began in the 1930s.
         
      • When you walk through the thick, handmade brick walls of The Citadel, you will feel a nostalgic step back in time.
         
      • From here we will continue to Bogra, where we will spend the night.

  13. December 13 | Sunday 

      A Day of Archaeology | Bogra to Rajshahi

      We'll have 6 hrs of driving today, but many great sites are on the way.

      • After breakfast, you will journey from Bogra to Rajshahi.

      Sompur Mahavihara

      • On the way, you will explore Sompur Mahavihara. This is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country.
         
      • It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and signifies one of the ancient universities that existed in the region of South Asia.
         
      • It was the biggest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas, and the vast complex itself, along with terracotta artworks and ruins of the central complex are ancient archaeological marvels in the country.

      Rajshahi

      • Silk City | Then we will continue for 3 more hours to reach Rajshahi.
         
      • Rajshahi is said to be the silk city of Bangladesh, and we will explore the natural silk processing. Another unique activity for the day!

  14. December 14 | Monday

      Puthia & Return to Dhaka

      Puthia

      • We drive to Puthia to explore the Puthia Rajbari and Temple Complex.
         
      • Architectural Sites | The establishments are of the 18th century, representing the rich heritage of the late Mughal and English colonial era and examples of Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture.
         
      • Hindu Temples | We will also explore several Hindu-crafted temples scattered around the Puthia area.

      Return to Dhaka

      • We will have a long drive back to Bangladesh's capital that will take approximately 6 hours.
         
      • National Martyrs' Monument | The structure consists of seven pairs of triangular walls. Each pair represents a significant chapter in Bangladesh’s history, from the Language Movement of 1952 to the 1971 Liberation War. We will also walk through the beautifully landscaped gardens and reflective pools, exploring the mass graves and the site’s profound significance as a symbol of national sacrifice and sovereignty.
         
      • Arrival in Dhaka and check-in at hotel where we will spend the remaining nights of the tour.

  15. December 15 | Tuesday

      Dhaka City Tour

      • Today we head to all the top tourist attractions of Dhaka, covering Parliament House, Dhaka University area, Dhakweswari Temple, and Lalbagh Fort.
         
      • After lunch, we explore the tiny alleys of old Dhaka to visit Star Mosque, Armenian Church and Pink Palace.

  16. December 16 | Wednesday

      Bengal Heritage & Victory Day

      December 16 is Victory Day in Bangladesh, celebrating the nation's independence from Pakistan in 1971.

      Sonagaon

      • We drive to Sonagaon (a 1.5-hour drive) to explore the first capital area of Bengal.
         
      • Local School Visit | We will visit a local school and experience how locals celebrate Victory Day.
         
      • Village Tour | We will get into auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuk) and explore village life and the local crafts here.
         
      • Lunch with Local Family | For lunch, we will enjoy food with a local family. 
         
      • Bengal Heritage | In the afternoon, you will meet the rich and true heritage of Bengal by stepping into renovated buildings like Sardarbari. There is also the folk museum, and we can see exquisite terracotta decorations and wood carving collections in the architecture of the old community buildings of rich merchants.
         
      • Farewell Dinner | We will enjoy our last dinner together at the hotel to reminisce over our Bangla adventures, and we will say our goodbyes here.

  Visa to Bhutan

  Your tour application counts as your visa application to the Kingdom of Bhutan, which will be arranged by Koryo Tours and its partner in Bhutan. All we need is your passport copy and a visa photo that you supply when signing up for the tour. The visa fee is 40 USD.
