  1. December 2 | Tuesday

     Arrival Day in Bhutan

     Arrival in the Himalayan Kingdom with an adrenaline-fueled approach to Paro Airport

     • You can arrive at Paro International Airport (PBH) from Dubai (arr. 10:30), Bangkok (arr. 10:40), or Delhi (arr. 15:20) on a Druk Air – Royal Bhutan Airlines flight to one of the World's scariest airports. Paro Airport is situated in a valley lying at an altitude of over 2,200 meters, surrounded by the high peaks of the Himalayas. Only specially certified pilots can land here.
        
     • Transfer to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan since 1955 (ca. 1-hour drive).
        
     • Check-in and refreshments at the hotel, followed by lunch.

     First Impressions of Bhutan

     • Gongzur (Memorial) Chorten | A stupa erected in the memory of the 3^rd King of Bhutan, Jigmi Dorji Wangchuk (reign: 1952-1972). It was built in 1974 by the Royal Grandmother Ashi for her son. There are no mortal remains of the King here, only a photograph draped in ceremonial scarves.
        
     • Dinner with a cultural show program of mask and folk dances.

     Thimphu

     Sightseeing in Thimphu, the largest city and capital of Bhutan (Alt.: 2,300 m)

     • Buddha Dordenma | Also known as the Buddha Point, this 51 metre high grand statue of Buddha was erected in 2015 to celebrate the 60^th birth anniversary of the 4th King, Jigme Singye Wangchuk (reign: 1972-2006).  
        
     • Royal Takin Preserve | At this wildlife preserve, which reopened in 2024, we can see the national animal of Bhutan, the takin (Dong Gyem Tse), which, according to legend, was assembled from the skull of a goat and the skeleton of a cow by prechear Drukp Kunley in the 15^th century.
        
     • National Institute of Zorig Chusum | There are two schools in Bhutan where students can master the thirteen traditional arts of Bhutan, one here in Thimphu and one in Trashiyangtse. Here we can visit classrooms where students learn the craftsmanship of, among others, wood carving, weaving, painting, and sculpting. Opposite the institute is an Art Gallery and Art Shop where you can buy Bhutanese art.
        
     • Kajaa Throm Farmers' Market | The central market of Thimpu. The ground floor sells imported products, while on the upper floor you can sample locally grown products such as different types of chillis and honey. There is also a food court here.
        
     • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory | A small factory where paper is manufactured traditionally. You can see all stages of the paper production from the preparation of the fibre to drying. Next to the factory is a small shop selling paper products.
        
     • Bhutan Postal Museum | This is more like a souvenir shop than a museum, selling stamps and books. Here you can even make your own stamp and use it to send your postcard to your loved ones.

  3. December 4 | Thursday

     Punakha

     Drive to Punakha, the previous capital of Bhutan

     • This morning we will drive to Punakha, the former capital of Bhutan till 1955. During our drive, we will see the Himalayan range peaks such as the world’s highest unclimbed mountain, Gangkar Puensum (7564 metres).
        
     • Druk Wangyel Stupas | Built with the finest wood and stone work, the Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo dedicated this as a tribute to the 4^th King Jigme Singye Wangchuck for his selfless sacrifices for the nation.  
        
     • Chimi Lhakhang | A 30-minute walk from the road, it is dedicated to Lama Drukpa Kuenley, who in the 15th century used humour, songs, and outrageous behaviour to dramatise his teachings and hence is also known as the ‘Divine Madman’ (he might be familiar by now from the myth of the takins). It is widely believed that childless couples who pray at this temple are usually blessed with children.

     Punkaha (Alt.: 1,310 m)

     • Punakha Dzong | A tentative UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was the seat of the Government of Bhutan until 1955. Its significance to the Bhutanese nation is emphasised by the fact that it not only remains the winter residence of the national clergy and the Chief Abbot of Buddhist Bhutan, but in 2010, the 5th King’s royal wedding ceremony took place here.
        
     • Homestay in Punakha | A highlight of the trip. We will spend a night at the homestay of a Bhutanese family, where we will be part of the life of our hosts, cooking and eating together with the family, and also share a few cups (at least three to follow the traditions!) ara, the national liquor of Bhutan.

     Paro

     Drive to Paro

     • Drive from Punakha to Paro (3-4 hours).

     Paro (Alt.: 2,250 m)

     • National Museum of Bhutan | Once the watch tower for the defence of Rinpung Dzong during the inter-valley wars of the 17th century, it was reestablished as the National Museum in 1967. It holds a fascinating collection of arts, relics, religious thangka paintings, handicrafts, masks, costumes, armour and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps. The visit will provide an insight into the rich and unique cultural heritage and tradition of Bhutan.
        
     • Rinpung Dzong | The “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels” was built in 1646 for defence against frequent incursions. Historically, it was an important administrative centre and the seat of many feudal lords and Penlop (governor). Today, it is the legislative, executive, judicial and religious centre for the people of Paro. It was also a filming location for Bernardo Bertolucci's 1993 movie, Little Buddha.

     Haa Valley

     Drive to Haa Velley

     • Our drive to the Haa Valley will take around 3 hours and is the most picturesque drive during our tour on narrow, serpentine mountain roads.
        
     • Chelela Pass | At 3,988 metres, it is the highest motorable point in Bhutan between Paro and Haa Valley. As we reach the highest point of the pass, shout "lyha gyelo" (may good win over evil) along with your Bhutanese guide and driver, a custom to do in Bhutan when reaching a mountain pass.
        
     • Hoisting Prayer Flags | We will hoist prayer flags along the mountain site during our journey to Haa. Prayer flags carry their own significance and blessings. Not only will the person who mounts the flag receive good karma, but all the sentient beings will benefit from the blessings carried by the wind. The reason why prayer flags are hung high above is so that the fluttering will emit positive spiritual vibrations.

     Haa Valley (Alt.: 2,670 m)

     • Haa Valley | One of the least visited parts of Bhutan, opened to foreign tourists only in 2002. It is one of the smallest and least populated districts in Bhutan, renowned for its natural beauty and traditional lifestyle.
        
     • Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo | The White and Black Temples are twin temples built in the 7^th century during the same time as the more often visited temple of Kichu Lhakhang (which we will visit the next day). According to the legend, to determine the location of the temples, the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo released two doves, a white and a black one, and where each of the doves landed, a temple was built; hence the name White and Black Temples.
        
     • Bhutanese Archery | Archery is the national sport of Bhutan, played on both traditional equipment made out of a special bamboo and imported modern fibre equipment. We will try the traditional bows and arrows.
        
     • Return to Paro (2-3 hours drive).

  6. December 7 | Sunday

     Hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest)

     Tiger's Nest

     • Taktsang Monastery | Commonly known as the Tiger's Nest, Bhutan's most revered temple is perched on a cliff 900 meters above Paro Valley. According to the legend, Guru Padmasambhava is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress from Singye Dzong in Lhuentse, to meditate in a cave where Taktsang now stands, hence the name ‘Tiger’s Nest’.
        
     • Note: the hike takes about 3 hours up and 2 hours down and requires good stamina. The first part of the hike up to Taktsang Cafeteria is moderate and can also be done on horseback, while the last bit just before reaching the monastery includes about 700 steps down and 250 steps up (and the reverse on the way back) that can be challenging for those not used to doing some regular exercise or have knee problems.

     Paro River Valley

     • Kichu Lhakhang | One of the oldest temples in Bhutan, which was built in the 7^th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 temples the Emperor built in Bhutan, and the main reason for the construction of the temple was to pin down ‘the left foot of the Ogress’, which was going against the establishment of Buddhism in the Himalayas.
        
     • Bhutanese Farm House | After the successful hike to Tiger's Nest, you can enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath here to regenerate your muscles and joints.
        
     • Our last dinner will also be served at the farmhouse preceded by a cooking class.

     Departure from Bhutan

     Paro to Dubai/Delhi/Bangokok on Drukair

     • Dukair – Royal Bhutan Airlines flights leave from Paro International Airport throughout the day. To Delhi at 09:40, to Dubai at 10:10, and to Bangkok at 16:20. If you fly to Bangkok today, we will make sure to have some more meaningful experience in Bhutan this morning, too.

  A combo tour not for the faint-hearted. Join us as we combine two epic countries, both with incredible nature, culture, and people. 

  But one a bit more chaotic than the other..! 

  First, to the mountains. We begin our adventure in Bhutan, the tiny Himalayan kingdom where Gross National Happiness matters more than GDP, and ancient traditions live on among soaring peaks and valleys. In a country where there are no traffic lights (only polite hand-waving policemen) and where even the airport landing feels like an achievement, we'll soak up everything that makes Bhutan so magical.

  Think grand fortresses (dzongs) rising from misty valleys, prayer flags flapping along mountain passes, farmers working the fields in traditional dress, and cliffside monasteries perched impossibly high above the world. We'll visit sleepy villages, walk to sacred sites, and soak up the calm cool atmosphere. 

  Then, just as you’ve adjusted to Bhutan's crisp mountain air, we swap the heights for the waterways, flying down into the bustling heart of Bangladesh. A country bursting with life and energy. 

  Here, history isn’t tucked away behind glass. It’s very much alive, vivid, and part of everyday life. We'll meet master saree weavers keeping ancient crafts alive, explore lost kingdoms, visit floating markets straight out of a storybook, and cruise through the vast Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest, home to crocodiles, river dolphins, and, if we're lucky, the elusive Royal Bengal Tiger.

  Along the way, we'll stop at places you won't find in most guidebooks: a YouTube-famous village where locals have turned daily life into online stardom. Ancient monasteries once bustling with monks and scholars. And remote fishing villages where otters help fishermen bring in the day’s catch. A centuries-old tradition still quietly surviving.

  This isn’t just two countries. It’s two completely different worlds. 

  One in the mountains, the other in the rivers. One where silence stretches across valleys, the other where life spills out into the streets, the markets, and the forests.

According to the legend, to determine the location of the temples, the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo released two doves, a white and a black one, and where each of the doves landed, a temple was built; hence the name White and Black Temples.
        
     • Bhutanese Archery | Archery is the national sport of Bhutan, played on both traditional equipment made out of a special bamboo and imported modern fibre equipment. We will try the traditional bows and arrows.
        
     • Return to Paro (2-3 hours drive).

     Hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest)

     Tiger's Nest

     • Taktsang Monastery | Commonly known as the Tiger's Nest, Bhutan's most revered temple is perched on a cliff 900 meters above Paro Valley. According to the legend, Guru Padmasambhava is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress from Singye Dzong in Lhuentse, to meditate in a cave where Taktsang now stands, hence the name ‘Tiger’s Nest’.
        
     • Note: the hike takes about 3 hours up and 2 hours down and requires good stamina. The first part of the hike up to Taktsang Cafeteria is moderate and can also be done on horseback, while the last bit just before reaching the monastery includes about 700 steps down and 250 steps up (and the reverse on the way back) that can be challenging for those not used to doing some regular exercise or have knee problems.

     Paro River Valley

     • Kichu Lhakhang | One of the oldest temples in Bhutan, which was built in the 7^th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 temples the Emperor built in Bhutan, and the main reason for the construction of the temple was to pin down ‘the left foot of the Ogress’, which was going against the establishment of Buddhism in the Himalayas.
        
     • Bhutanese Farm House | After the successful hike to Tiger's Nest, you can enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath here to regenerate your muscles and joints.
        
     • Our last dinner will also be served at the farmhouse preceded by a cooking class.

     From Bhutan to Bangladesh

     Paro to Dhaka on Drukair

     • We will say a teary goodbye to our Bhutanese hosts and fellow group members in Paro and board the Drukair flight KB300 to Dhaka Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) at 07:10.
     • Scheduled arrival in Dhaka at 08:40. Meet our Bangladeshi hosts and new fellow group members.

     Dhaka City Tour

     • Today we head to all the top tourist attractions of Dhaka, covering Parliament House, Dhaka University area, Dhakweswari Temple, and Lalbug Fort. 
        
     • If you love food, you may experience Dhakaya Biriani for lunch and also will keep exploring the long list of street foods along the way.
        
     • After lunch, we explore the tiny alleys of old Dhaka to visit Star Mosque, Armenian Church and Pink Palace.

  8. December 9 | Friday

     Architecture & Drive to Bogra

     Our journey starts in the morning. After breakfast, we will drive to Bogra. On the way, we have a few stops! 

     • Tangail Saree Weaving | On the way, you will explore tangail jamdani Saree weaving in the district of Tangail. A very unique activity! The traditional art of weaving jamdani was declared a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
        
     • Local Lunch | We will also enjoy a traditional lunch in the community here. 
        
     • Navaratna Temple | On the way to Bogra, we stop at Navaratna Temple of the 17th century.

     Mahasthangar

     • Afterwards, the trip takes us to Mahasthangar. This is the earliest urban archaeological site so far discovered in Bangladesh.
        
     • Though it seems like it is flat, it is actually 100+ feet above sea level where the first civilized establishment started in the region back in the 4th century BC. The capital Dhaka is only 20 feet above sea level. 
        
     • The full area was discovered by digging and some work still going on. The area was discovered in the early 18th century and the excavation was started in the 1930s.
        
     • When you walk through the thick handmade brick walls of The Citadel, you will feel a nostalgic step back in time.
        
     • Check in Hotel | In the late evening, you will check in to the hotel.

     A Day of Archaeology | Bogra to Rajshahi

     We'll have 6 hrs of driving today, but many great sites are on the way.

     • Journey Start | After breakfast, you will journey from Bogra to Rajshahi.

     Sompur Mahavihara

     • On the way, you will explore Sompur Mahavihara. This is one of the most important archaeological sites in the country.
        
     • It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and signifies one of the ancient universities top exist in the region of South Asia.
        
     • It was the biggest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas and the vast complex itself along with, terracotta artworks and ruins of the central complex are ancient archaeological marvels in the country.

     Rajshahi

     • Silk City | Then we will continue for 3 more hours to reach Rajshahi.
        
     • Rajshahi is said to be the silk city of Bangladesh and we will explore the natural silk processing. Another unique activity for the day!

      Puthia & YouTube Village

      • After breakfast, we drive to Puthia to explore the Puthia Rajbari and Temple Complex.
         
      • Architectural Sites | The establishments are of the 18th century representing the rich heritage of the late Mughal and English colonial era and examples of Indo-Saracenic Revival architecture.
         
      • Hindu Temples | You will also explore several Hindu-crafted temples scattered around the Puthia area.

      Bangladesh YouTube Village

      • Kushtia | Exploring the area, you will be driven to a remote village on the way to Kushtia. The village is now called YouTube Village.
         
      • In the village, there are many YouTubers who have transformed their village from the income from YouTube and they make videos on their daily village life. You can see their videos here! 
         
      • This is a unique experience and cultural diversity that you may experience here in Kushtia. The preparation starts at noon and ends in the evening when the villagers come over to enjoy free meals.

      Travel to Khulna/Mongla | Sundarbans

      • We will start our day early in the morning to reach Khulna/Mongla which will be a 3.5 hrs of drive from the hotel. 

      Travel to the Sundarbans

      • Breakfast on Boat | We will start our tour with breakfast on the vessel as it gently starts to move forward towards the Sundarbans.
         
      • Harbaria | After 3 hours of cruising, you will get down in Harbaria. Our first meetup with Sundarbans Forest! 

      Kochikhali (Sundarbans)

      • Start of Jungle Safari | You will reach Kochikhali in the evening where we will have time to explore the forest for some time.
         
      • Mangrove Forest | In Kochikhali we’ll observe the natural beauty of the Mangrove forest. When the sun starts to set, you will find wild animals walking silently near river beds and coming to shore for drinking water.
         
      • We'll spend the night here on the boat at Kochikhali.

      Exploring the Wildlife of the Sundarbans

      • Sunrise Wildlife Spotting | Very early in the morning when the sun rises, we will get into a small country boat and explore the silent beauty of Sundarban in expectation of encountering wildlife.
         
      • They come very close to river banks to drink fresh water. We hope to meet with the dears, thousands of birds, wild pigs and many other wild animals.
         
      • Royal Bengal Tiger | If we are lucky enough, we might even come across the famed Royal Bengal Tiger. 

      Kotka Area

      • Jamtora Beach | The day will pass doing jungle trekking around the Jamtora Beach area, visiting the watch tower, and feeding deer at the Kotka area.
         
      • We will enjoy yummy food along with eagle feeding on the river side of Kokta.
         
      • We stay the night on the boat at Kokta and depending on the tide, we will move upstream.

      Return from Sundarbans

      This day you will return from The Sundarbans.

      We will cruise back to the locality depending on tide times.

      Danga Maari Canal, River Dolphins

      • On the way back, we may stop at Danga Maari Canal.
         
      • River Dolphins | This is a place where you'll find river dolphins. If we are lucky enough, we may find one or two popping up for fresh air.

      Norail District Remote Village, Otter Fishing

      • Norail District | After early lunch, we will travel to a remote village in Norail District which is a 2 hrs drive from Mongla.
         
      • Here, we will explore the lives of fishermen who use otters as their helpers in fishing.
         
      • A unique experience of collaboration between wild animals and humans. This is a century-old culture, now practised by just one/two families.
        
        Note: There is no animal cruelty involved. Rather, the otters are like pets working together with their owners and helping each other to survive.
         
      • Afterwards, we will drive to Barishal for an overnight stay.

      Remote Rural Bangladesh

      This day starts with an early morning at 6:00 AM. 

      • Kuriana | Our first stop is “Kuriana”, a one-hour drive away. 
         
      • Canal Cruise | Reaching there, you will be embarking on a country motorboat with a boatman for a Back Water Tour (Canal Cruise) on the canals among remote rural villages.
         
      • Floating Vegetable Market | Within a short time, you will reach a point, named – “Baukathi” where you will be watching “Floating Vegetable Market”.
         
      • On this floating market, you will be watching many traditional handheld wooden boats with local village farmers selling their fresh-grown vegetables to the city vegetable vendors.
         
      • After this floating market, it's back to the water canal cruising again.
         
      • Rural Bangladesh | Cruise among narrow canals and watch the panoramic views of a real rural Bangladesh.
         
      • Luxury River Cruise to Dhaka | In the evening, you will ride on a river cruise to have a relaxed overnight journey to Dhaka in 1st class cabin.

      Note: Today we experience the raw travel style of Bangladesh as we head into the rural countryside. We will have 4 hrs in an engine boat and a 2hrs tuk-tuk ride today. Only basic restrooms will be available.

      Return to Dhaka

      Our boat will reach Dhaka early in the morning. After breakfast, we will start our expedition for the second-to-last day.

      Sonagaon

      • We drive to Sonagaon (a 1.5-hour drive) to explore the first capital area of Bengal.
         
      • Bengal Heritage | You will meet the rich and true heritage of Bengal by stepping into renovated buildings like Sardarbari. There is also the folk museum, and you can see exquisite terracotta decorations and wood carving collections in the architecture of the old community buildings of rich merchandise businessmen. 
         
      • Goaldi mosque | The oldest single dome mosque and built in 16 AD.
         
      • Lunch with Local Family | For lunch, we will enjoy food with a local family. 
         
      • Local School Visit | In the afternoon, we will visit a local school.

      Dhaka / Free Time

      • In the afternoon/evening, we will get back to the hotel. For the evening you will be free to move around the hotel and shopping.

     Arrival Day in Guwahati

     Arrival in the largest city of Assam and the gateway to Northeast India and East Bhutan

     • Arrive at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) from major Indian cities with international flight connections. The latest recommended arrival time in Guwahati is 16:00.
        
     • Your driver will wait for you at the airport to pick you up for a transfer to Dynasty Hotel, where Michael Palin also stayed during filming the BBC documentary Himalaya with Michael Palin.
        
     • Check-in at the hotel.

     Welcome Dinner

     • We will gather in the hotel's restaurant for orientation and a welcome dinner to sample some excellent Indian food.

  2. March 4 | Wednesday

     From India to Bhutan

     Drive from Guwahati, India to Sandrup Jongkhar, Bhutan

     • We will depart by chartered bus from the Dynasty Hotel in the morning and reach the Indo-Bhutanese border after driving ca. 100 kilometres in about 3 hours.
        
     • After Indian exit formalities, we will cross over to the land of the Thunder Dragon, where we will receive our Bhutanese visa and be stamped into Bhutan. Today's destination is just a few minutes drive from the border checkpoint.

     Sandrup Jonghkar (Alt.: 173 m)

     • Check-in and lunch at the hotel.
        
     • We will spend the afternoon exploring the streets of Samdrup Jongkhar, which is situated in the country's southeastern region. It is the largest urban centre in Eastern Bhutan. In the past, many British political officers stationed in Sikkim took the route from Samdrup Jongkhar to enter Bhutan.
        
     • During our stroll, we will stop at a Tashi Cell shop to get our local SIM card, and there will also be an opportunity to exchange Bhutanese ngultrum (BTN). If you have Indian rupees, you can also use them throughout Bhutan, and the exchange rate is 1:1.
        
     • Refreshments and dinner at the hotel.

  3. March 5 | Thursday

     Drive to Trashigang 180km (Alt 1174 m)

     • After an early breakfast, drive to Trashigang. The driving distance is roughly 6 hours and you will see different vegetation as you drive towards Trashigang.
        
     • National Handloom Development Project | Enroute, stop at Khaling and visit the National Handloom Development Project operated by the National Women's Association of Bhutan. The weaving centre uses only natural dyes for the exquisite traditional textiles that are produced here.
        
     • National Institute for the Disabled | Depending on time and interest, visit the National Institute for the Disabled. The Institute assimilates students from all over Bhutan who are blind or handicapped into the local educational system and provides special resources and training.
        
     • Trashigang | Trashigang is the country’s largest district with an altitude ranging from 600m to over 4000m. Trashigang town is set on a scenic hillside and was once a bustling trade centre for merchants looking to barter their goods in Tibet. Trashigang is also the principal marketplace for the semi-nomadic people of Merak and Sakteng, whose unique way of dress stands out from the regular Bhutanese gho and kira.
        
     • Trashigang has areas where certain shaman practices still exist and many age–old traditions and practices thrive in the rural areas here.
        
     • Enjoy some refreshments before retiring for the day.

     Day Excursion to Merak, 64km (Alt 3520m)

     • After an early breakfast, we enjoy a day excursion to Merak. We will drive to the alpine village of Merak, which opened to tourism only in 2010, with great care to safeguard the unique customs and lifestyle of this small community.
        
     • Rangjung | En route, we pass through Rangjung, a small commercial hub of several villages in the area.
        
     • Rice Bowl of the East | Continue driving through Radhi, a village known as the 'Rice Bowl of the East' for being the largest producer of rice in the east. The village of Radhi is also known for producing naturally dyed raw silk textiles in the country.
        
     • The drive takes 3 hours or so to reach Merak.
        
     • Lunch served at 12 noon in Merak village Home Stay.
        
     • Exploration of Merak Village | You will visit some of the places of interest within the village with historical and religious significance, visit the family home, and observe their daily life. You may also want to try on their unique traditional costumes. These totally stand out from the national dress Gho (men’s dress) and Kira (women’s dress).
        
     • School Visit | Visit the school where you can interact with weather-beaten but inquisitive and cheerful students.
        
     • The whole village of Merak is a cluster of houses on a beautiful meadow surrounded by scattered dwarf rhododendrons.
        
     • Retrace the journey to Trashigang.
        
     • Refreshments are served before retiring for the day.

     Drive to Trashi Yangtse - Mongar, 58km (Alt 1800m)

     • After an early hearty breakfast, drive to Trashi Yangtse.
        
     • We retrace the road back towards Mongar by descending until Chazam (9km). From Chazam, take the side road through sparse vegetation to Gomkora (13km). Around 2 km after Gomkora, you will arrive at the sleepy little town of Doksum (860m). From Doksum, the road turns northwest following the Kulong Chu valley and finally arrives at Trashiyangtse. 

     Chorten Kora

     • Chorten Kora of Trashi Yangtse is said to be built in the same style as that of the Buddha Stupa of Nepal, lying on a low river valley below the Trashiyangtse town.
        
     • The structure is said to be the most historical structure of Buddhist culture. Lots of tourists are attracted throughout the year in this beautiful place which is gaining its importance as a popular location of sightseeing in Trashiyangtse.
        
     • Lama Gnawang Lodey built this chorten in 1740. It is said that the chorten was built in the site where a demon was subdued. An annual festival is celebrated in Chorten Kora on the 15th day of the third month. People from different places assemble here to celebrate this festival. Hundreds of Dakpas from Arunachal Pradesh visit the chorten every year during the festival time.
        
     • Lunch served in Trashi Yangtse.

     Institute of Zorig Chusum

     • Institute of Zorig Chusum | The Institute of Zorig Chusum was established in order to promote and preserve the cultural Heritage of Bhutan. Formerly, the institute of Zorig Chusum was known as the Rigney Training Institute.
        
     • The institute works under the Department of Human Resources and the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources. This training institute was established on 2nd June 1997. Mr. Lam Kelzang acted as the Principal with two instructors and 22 students.
        
     • The institute provides courses in various fields, including painting, carving, sculpting, wood carving, traditional ornament making, tailoring of traditional clothes and hand embroidery, etc.
        
     • Drive to Mongar (136 km, Alt:1648m)

     A journey to Central Bhutan

     • After breakfast, your journey to central Bhutan commences today. Although the drive is long (7 hrs), it is an interesting one where you will go through high passes, scenic villages, rivers and vegetation.
        
     • Driving along the east bank of Kuri Chuu and climbing up to Sengor village, and the Thrumshingla pass, the highest pass in Bhutan (3750m), the route slowly descends into Ura Valley, a serene village. 

     Ura Valley

     • Ura valley is fascinating (3100m), the highest of the four Bumthang valleys. Ura is one of the most picturesque villages in Bhutan, having about 50 closely packed houses along cobblestone streets.
        
     • You will have a once-in-a-lifetime experience spending a night at Chimmi Wangmo Home-stay, which is one of the best home experiences in the village.
        
     • Aum Chimmi and her family run a farm stay which is almost 50 years old, and it is a two-story house situated just below Ura Lhakhang. The farmhouse flaunts beautiful architectural works and an impressive structure. You can enjoy the Bhutanese hospitality at Chimmi Wangmo Farm Stay.
        
     • Refreshments served before retiring for the day.

  7. March 9 | Monday

     Drive to Tang Valley & Sightseeing in Jakar (Alt 2587m)

     • After breakfast at the farm stay, we will take a walk in the beautiful village and also visit Ura Lhakhang (temple) dedicated to Guru Rinpoche.
        
     • Ura Lhakhang Temple | Inaugurated in 1986, the temple contains a huge statue of the master and remarkable paintings of the cycle of his teachings. Over the last few decades, Ura has been transformed from a marginal community to a prosperous valley.
        
     • Traversing further for about 56km and a 2-hour drive, we end up in the Tang valley of Bumthang.

     Tang Valley of Bumthang

     • Ogyen Choling Museum | Visit a privately owned Ogyen Choling Museum. Although Ogyen Choling was a palace owned by the ancestors of the Royal family of Bhutan, it was regarded as a monastery or hermitage because of its past connections with great Buddhist masters like Longchen Rabjam (1308-63) and Terton Dorji Lingpa (1346-1405). It was turned into a museum in 2001 with the aim of sharing its heritage and also preserving and maintaining its religious and cultural significance.
        
     • Lunch served.
        
     • Drive to Jakar, which is the heart of Bumthang town.

     Jakar

     • Jakar Dzong | Visit Jakar Dzong, founded by the great-grandfather of the first Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. This Dzong was initially built as a monastery in 1549. It was upgraded after the Zhabdrung had firmly established his power in 1646.

     • The Dzong is now used as the administrative centre for Bumthang valley, and also houses the regional monk body.
        
     • Visit Kenchosum Lhakhang.
        
     • Refreshments served before retiring for the day.

  8. March 10 | Tuesday

     Thimpu

     Scenic flight to Paro

     • Druk Air flight KB13 at 06:50 from Bumthang Airport, arriving at Paro International Airport at 07:25. Take the seat on the right side as it will give you amazing views of all the Himalayan ranges in Bhutan.
        
     • Drive to Thimpu (1-1.5 hrs), check-in and refreshments at the hotel.

     Thimpu (Alt.: 2,250 metres)

     • Kajaa Throm Farmers' Market | The central market of Thimpu. The ground floor sells imported products, while on the upper floor you can sample locally grown products such as different types of chillis and honey. There is also a food court here.
        
     • Gongzur (Memorial) Chorten | A stupa erected in the memory of the 3^rd King of Bhutan, Jigmi Dorji Wangchuk (reign: 1952-1972). It was built in 1974 by the Royal Grandmother Ashi for her son. There are no mortal remains of the King here, only a photograph draped in ceremonial scarves.
        
     • Buddha Dordenma | Also known as the Buddha Point, this 51 metre high grand statue of Buddha was erected in 2015 to celebrate the 60^th birth anniversary of the 4th King, Jigme Singye Wangchuk (reign: 1972-2006).  
        
     • Royal Takin Preserve | At this wildlife preserve, which reopened in 2024, we can see the national animal of Bhutan, the takin (Dong Gyem Tse), which, according to legend, was assembled from the skull of a goat and the skeleton of a cow by prechear Drukp Kunley in the 15^th century.

     Paro

     Arts and Crafts in Thimpu

     • Bhutan Postal Museum | This is more like a souvenir shop than a museum, selling stamps and books. Here you can even make your own stamp and use it to send your postcard to your loved ones.
        
     • Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory | A small factory where paper is manufactured traditionally. You can see all stages of the paper production from the preparation of the fibre to drying. Next to the factory is a small shop selling paper products.
        
     • National Institute of Zorig Chusum | There are two schools in Bhutan where students can master the thirteen traditional arts of Bhutan, one here in Thimphu and one in Trashiyangtse. Here we can visit classrooms where students learn the craftsmanship of, among others, wood carving, weaving, painting, and sculpting. Opposite the institute is an Art Gallery and Art Shop where you can buy Bhutanese art.

     Paro (Alt.: 2,250 m)

     • Drive to Paro (1-1.5 hours).
        
     • National Museum of Bhutan | Once the watch tower for the defence of Rinpung Dzong during the inter-valley wars of the 17th century, it was reestablished as the National Museum in 1967. It holds a fascinating collection of arts, relics, religious thangka paintings, handicrafts, masks, costumes, armour and Bhutan’s exquisite postage stamps. The visit will provide an insight into the rich and unique cultural heritage and tradition of Bhutan.
        
     • Rinpung Dzong | The “Fortress on a Heap of Jewels” was built in 1646 for defence against frequent incursions. Historically, it was an important administrative centre and the seat of many feudal lords and Penlop (governor). Today, it is the legislative, executive, judicial and religious centre for the people of Paro. It was also a filming location for Bernardo Bertolucci's 1993 movie, Little Buddha.

      Hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest)

      Tiger's Nest

      • Taktsang Monastery | Commonly known as the Tiger's Nest, Bhutan's most revered temple is perched on a cliff 900 meters above Paro Valley. According to the legend, Guru Padmasambhava is said to have flown here on the back of a tigress from Singye Dzong in Lhuentse, to meditate in a cave where Taktsang now stands, hence the name ‘Tiger’s Nest’.
         
      • Note: the hike takes about 3 hours up and 2 hours down and requires good stamina. The first part of the hike up to Taktsang Cafeteria is moderate and can also be done on horseback, while the last bit just before reaching the monastery includes about 700 steps down and 250 steps up (and the reverse on the way back) that can be challenging for those not used to doing some regular exercise or have knee problems.

      Paro River Valley

      • Kichu Lhakhang | One of the oldest temples in Bhutan, which was built in the 7^th century by the Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo. It is one of the 108 temples the Emperor built in Bhutan, and the main reason for the construction of the temple was to pin down ‘the left foot of the Ogress’, which was going against the establishment of Buddhism in the Himalayas.
         
      • Bhutanese Farm House | After the successful hike to Tiger's Nest, you can enjoy a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath here to regenerate your muscles and joints.
         
      • Our last dinner will also be served at the farmhouse preceded by a cooking class.

  You will most likely need a visa for India. Most nationalities can apply for a double-entry visa on the government of India's official e-Visa website.

  Your tour application counts as your visa application to the Kingdom of Bhutan, which will be arranged by Koryo Tours and its partner in Bhutan. We only need your passport copy and a visa photo you supply when signing up for the tour. The visa fee is 40 USD.
