Depends on your nationality. At least 87 nationalities enjoy visa-free access to Tajikistan, including the United States and the European Union. There is additional visa-free access for other countries, including China, for those over the age of 55. Most other countries are eligible for the Tajik eVisa which can be obtained through your registered travel company.
When is the best time to visit Tajikistan?
Most travel to Tajikistan takes place during the spring, summer, and autumn. During the winter, trips further afield into the Fann and Pamir mountains becomes difficult, and in some cases impossible. Generally trips to the country are recommended between March – October. Visits during the height of summer (July & August) can encounter difficulties with the heat in the lower-regions around Dushanbe, although this period is perfect for visits into the Pamir mountains.
Is it safe to travel in Tajikistan?
Yes. Tajikistan is considered a safe destination, especially alongside registered travel companies and along established tourism routes. Crime levels affecting foreign visitors are relatively low, although it’s of course advised to take normal precautions around cities and markets. Remote areas of the country are recommended not to be attempted without a qualified guide and experienced driver owing to suddenly-changing weather conditions and altitude. The region along the border with Afghanistan should only be visited alongside qualified guides and along established routes.
What language is spoken in Tajikistan?
The official language of Tajikistan is Tajik, closely related to the Persian Farsi language, and Dari, spoken in Afghanistan. Tajik is written using the Cyrillic alphabet, and Russian remains a widely-spoken second language in much of the country. In Dushanbe, English is slowly becoming more common.
What currency is used and how do I access money?
The official currency is the Tajikistani Somoni (TJS). Cash remains important in much of the country outside of the capital. ATMs are widely available in Dushanbe and other major cities, although are rare in the countryside. There are opportunities to exchange foreign currency, particularly USD and EUR at exchange offices, banks, and some hotels.
