The area is also home to indigenous communities, including the Khasia people, and the lush Lawachara National Park.

Sreemangal Location

Sreemangal is situated in Moulvibazar District.

It is renowned for its undulating hills covered with tea gardens and dense forests.

You’ll also find several small water bodies traverse the area, contributing to its lush greenery.

It’s approximately 191 kilometres northeast of Dhaka, so accessible for those travelling to Bangladesh. 


History of Sreemangal

The tea industry in Sreemangal dates back to the British colonial period when tea plantations were established in the Sylhet region. 

Today the tea industry is the backbone of Sreemangal’s economy. It provides jobs to thousands of workers, including women from local communities. 

Sreemangal’s tea is a major export product for Bangladesh.


Visiting Sreemangal 

1. Tea Gardens

Sreemangal’s tea gardens are its most iconic feature. The area produces the majority of Bangladesh’s tea, known for its quality and flavour.

Just imagine the endless stretches of manicured tea bushes on rolling hills…You can tour the gardens, learn about tea production, and taste freshly brewed tea.

The area also includes estates like the Finlay Tea Company and the picturesque Nilkantha Tea Cabin, famous for its seven-layer tea.

2. Lawachara National Park

Lawachara National Park is a tropical rainforest located near Sreemangal. 

The park is home to towering trees, orchids, and bamboo groves, and wildlife includes hoolock gibbons, capped langurs, macaques, and over 250 bird species.

You can take guided treks through the forest, enjoy bird watching, and of course photography.

3. Khasia Matriarchal Tribal Village

The Khasia community is an indigenous tribe with a unique matriarchal social structure.

This tribe resides in villages near Sreemangal.

Here, you can learn about their traditional practices, farming techniques, and matriarchal inheritance system.

The Khasia are known for their betel leaf gardens, a significant part of their economy.

4. Baikka Beel Wetland Sanctuary

Located near Sreemangal, Baikka Beel is a large wetland sanctuary that serves as a haven for migratory birds. Great for bird watching enthusiasts! 


When to Visit?

The region experiences a subtropical climate:

  • Monsoons (June to October): Heavy rainfall nourishes the tea gardens and forests.
  • Winters (November to February): Mild and pleasant, ideal for tourism.
  • Summers (March to May): Warm and humid, with occasional thunderstorms.

Getting There 

  • By Road: Regular buses connect Sreemangal to Dhaka, Sylhet, and other major cities.
  • By Train: Trains from Dhaka and Sylhet offer scenic journeys.
  • By Air: The nearest airport is in Sylhet, about 90 kilometres away.
