Introduction

Pi Island beach is a beach on North Korea's West Coast in Nampo, North Korea.  

It is a perfect way to spend the afternoon or an hour or two in summer whilst you are visiting Nampo and the West Sea Barrage. 

Here, you can enjoy swimming and relax with local North Koreans.

Location

Pi Island beach is located just 10 minutes away from the West Sea Barrage in Nampo. 

It is best to get to the beach by car or bus from the West Sea Barrage. 

Once at the gated entrance, you will be able to drive in and park after you have paid the entrance fee. 

Once in the beach area, you are free to roam around as far as the beach lets you. You can walk left towards the pier where you will find some street food stalls selling local North Korean food, or you can walk right to the main beach area. Keep going this way, and you will eventually hit rocks and have to turn back.

Facilities

At Pi Island Beach, you will find the following facilities; 

Sea suitable for swimming

Despite the colour of the water and the questionable cleanliness, you can swim in this sea.

It doesn't get too deep, especially at low-tide. 

Located in a small alcove, the waves are also not strong. 

Swimming costume rental

Located downstairs near to the entrance of the main beach area. 

Inflatables rental

Located downstairs near to the entrance of the main beach area. 

BBQ service and food available for purchase

Located upstairs on the balcony area. 

On-site shop selling snacks, water, and beer

Located upstairs on the balcony area. 

Various games and recreational activities 

There are various games that you can pay extra to play. 

This includes a shooting game, and also karaoke. Although, there is no karaoke rental. You'll just have to join in with the locals and their private karaoke kits. Hope you know some North Korean songs! 

Please be aware that they may only accept North Korean money and you may have to have the help of your North Korean guide for this. 

Table, chairs, and tent rental

If you want to relax and eat here, then you will have to hire a tent or some tables and chairs. The tents are usually all fully booked on a busy summers day with local North Koreans. 

You can rent some tables and chairs in the upstairs balcony area and have a great view looking out onto the beach and sea from here. 

Changing room and shower facilities

Available for both men and women, with hot water!

Visiting Tips

• If you want to go here when it is busy, make sure to go of a weekend or a public holiday. 
   
• There is a small entry fee.
   
• Alternatively, if you want to go here when it isn't busy, go during the weak or off-peak season. 
   
• There are lots of shells in the water. It is not a good idea to try to wade through the water at low tide, as you might cut your feet. (We speak from experience).
   
• It is an extra cost to hire swimwear. 
   
• It is an extra cost to hire tables and chairs or a tent dining area.
