Dushanbe Today
Dushanbe is the capital of Tajikistan.
This once small village has grown into Tajikistan’s largest city and capital.
It was made capital of Tajikistan in 1924 when its name was Dyushambe.
From 1929 – 1961 it was named Stalinabad reverting back to Dushanbe during the de-Stalinization period in the early ’60s.
The name Dushanbe refers to the Tajik for Monday as a reference to the regular Monday market.
Dushanbe is located on the confluence of two rivers; the Varzob and the Kofarnihon Rivers.
During the period of Dushanbe’s Soviet history, the city grew at a rapid pace with much redevelopment. Many of these soviet style buildings still remain, although their future is uncertain as Dushanbe undertakes its new building boom.
