The road to the DPRK via China’s Northeast, or the Russian Far East, is one less travelled, but by no means less fascinating.
Once known to the world as ‘Manchuria’, the territory has long been at the cultural crossroads of Chinese, Korean, Russian, Japanese, Mongol, and Manchu cultures in northeast Asia. Two ancient medieval Korean kingdoms, Koguryo and Palhae, once ruled over these lands, and the territory that now comprises the DPRK.
the capital of China’s Liaoning Province, is a major industrial city in northeast China with a multi-ethnic population. Shenyang also boasts historical buildings dating back to the early days of the Manchu Qing Dynasty, as well as more modern buildings dating from the Chinese Republic and the period of Japanese rule over the puppet state of Manchukuo. The city also has a large ethnic Korean community. In the Xita neighborhood you can find North Korean, South Korean, and Korean-Chinese businesses all lining the same streets.
is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and Russia’s major Pacific port. Despite its relative youth as a city, Vladivostok has seen its fair share of historic events and related sights to explore.

The Chinese city of Dandong is the main entrée port for land crossings into the DPRK. Here it is possible to see a section of the Great Wall overlooking Korea and see a number of sights related to Chinese involvement in the Korean War. From Dandong it is possible to catch the Beijing-Pyongyang train, or visit the Korean city of Sinuiju located across the Yalu (Kr. Amnok River). Yanji is the largest city of China’s Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, often called the ‘Third Korea’. The region shares close cultural ties with northern Korea, and is the point of departure for trips to the DPRK’s province of North Hamgyong, including Mt. Chilbo, and the Rason Special Economic Zone. Private tours of either region are possible and are best done in groups of 3+. Please see our Rason website for further details and enquiry for costs

There are two flights a week from Shenyang, the industrial capital of Liaoning Province. There are also two flights a week from Vladivostok, terminus of the Trans-Siberian and Russia’s major Pacific port. It is also possible to travel overland by train from Dandong to the DPRK city of Sinuiju, or overland by bus to DPRK’s Rason Special Economic Zone or North Hamgyong Province.
