GAMES UPDATE - May 12th 2008
We have just been informed
that this year’s Mass Games have been expanded
to include two different events, both staged in Pyongyang’s
May Day stadium with a full compliment of 100,000 performers.
Running from
August 4th until the end of September every day bar Sunday
will see a 100 minute afternoon performance of an all-new
Mass Games show named ‘Prosper the Motherland!’ staged
specially for the 60th anniversary of the foundation
of the DPRK (9th
September). The classic ‘Arirang’ - an
80 minute gymnastic and socialist realism extravaganza
- will be performed in the evening. |

The latest
news from Pyongyang (April 2008) is that the
mass games will be held from August 4th to the
end of September. These dates have not yet been
confirmed
and it is normal for them to be altered as the
event draws closer - we expect the actual run of
the games
to go on into October so please keep checking
the website for updates.

July 27th 2008 is the 55th anniversary of the ending
of the Korean War. In DPRK the war is referred to as
the ‘Victorious Fatherland Liberation War’ and
they consider it to be one of the defining events in
DPRK history as well as a famous triumph against a much
mightier foe. This is the biggest holiday of the year
so far in North Korea and you can be there for all the
celebrations that will take place on the big day itself.

Film Festival Tour MASS

Here’s your chance to be at an utterly unique event;
the Cannes of the East, the Sundance of Asia, the Pyongyang
International Film Festival, held every other year is
taking place between Sept 13 and 23 in 2008, you can
be there for the closing ceremony and should have the
chance to see some of North Korea’s biggest films
of the year as well as schmoozing with film magnates
from across the non-aligned world. There’s no other
festival quite like this one! The tour will also visit
the sights of Pyongyang as well as Kaesong. Please note
that there is only a very limited interaction for tourists
at the festival but we will do our best to get you to
meet one or two DPRK film stars and see at least one
DPRK film with English subtitles. We will meet with Nick
Bonner (co producer of 3 documentaries in DPRK) and a
few other foreign film makers to meet up over a drink
at the bar and discuss the highs and lows of making films
in the country.
